I saw this on AnimeonDVD regarding a post on the DVDTalk forums. Apparently, the subtitles were done like this on purpose because of "incompatibilities" with older DVD players that can't display closed captioning.

Cool. So does that mean Dreamworks will also replace all the DVDs in stores with the new version? If not and I happen to buy the movie and end up not liking the "subs" anyway, do I still have to send it in for a replacement? Truth be told, I was hoping they'd just re-release the whole thing with actual English subtitles and not-so-ugly cover art. Maybe I'll just wait a while...

Yes Tony, they will be replacing them. Here's a bit of info that should help you out though..
"If you are not satisfied with the subtitle options on your "Ghost in the Shell 2" DVD, DreamWorks Home Entertainment will replace it with a version that includes English Language subtitles. If "v4" is printed on the package spine, you already have English Language subtitles. This program applies to Region 1 DVDs and to consumers with U.S. and Canada addresses only. To receive a postage-paid mailer in which to return your original "Ghost in the Shell 2" DVD disc only, please provide the following information. Please send the DVD only; do not send the DVD package. On receipt of your DVD, DreamWorks Home Entertainment will send your replacement." So basically, check for the v4 on the spine. If it's there, then it's the corrected disc. |

They're idiots because there was a production mistake and now they are offering everyone free corrected replacments?

Great. Then I'll wait a while until I'm sure they replace the ones in stores. As for cover art, would it be against "Teh Rules" if I asked where to find a scan of the original DVD cover so I could print and swap it with the R1 cover ? I haven't even seen the original and I know it sounds silly, but the R1 cover just looks ugly in itself.

This is great. However, living in Sweden, I can't take advantade of the swapping program the normal way. Sure hope my importer can do something...

Nice to see they got caught in their own PR lie and when they saw people weren't buying it, the line aobut compadability and the DVD, they decided to recall it. I don't know what the real story is behind this screw up, but at least now we can at least get a real subtitle track.
Ok, now I belive I can buy this movie now. Will have to look on the spine for that v4 of course. Wish they redid the crappy cover too, but I can always print out something better. Hell, just about any image would be better. -Xenos |

No, they are not idiots, they actually showed that they had spine. When they were caught in their PR lie, they fessed up that they had made a mistake (not a mistake of trying to get profits by being cheap with the subtitles, which was their real mistake, but that what they did with the subtitling was a mistake) and are offering consumers redress by giving them the DVD they wanted. That takes corporate spine, and I applaud them for it instead of telling the minority (the anime fans) to go screw themselves, which they could have done and not seen serious profit hits. |

Actually they're idiots for thinking for a second people would buy that PR release. The only reason they are actually doing anything about it is because they could technically get sued for a kind of fraud/misrepresentation. On the back of the disc it actually states that there are English Subtitles AND closed captioning for the hearing impaired, meaning 2 separate "subtitling" tracks.
They just thought that maybe they could cover the loses of all the printed discs that now have to be replaced by seeing if anyone would buy the initial cover story. |

"A production error (not an intentional decision) caused early versions of the DVD to be produced without the intended subtitle tracks, but only SDH (subtitles for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired)." Don't believe everything thing you read on the internet.
Nice to know you can read people minds. Companies can be sued for anything, so this is nothing new. If you think someone would go through the trouble and effort and money to sue someone for a $20 DVD then that's quite funny. |
