so i just go the first disc of Saiyuki reload from netflix. i just have one question.
how? HOW!!
how did such a good anime get soooo bad and no one in the production team noticed?
it's not just the dismal voice acting, which in and of itself would be enough to make me want to turn it off, but the animation its self was sub par.
i mean it looks enough like the first two seasons to fool you until you start watching the thing. it's like some one took stills from the manga and added sound.
the characters dont even look the same. i'm not just talking about the costume changes or different hairdos.
all the guys have broader chests and wider shoulders and the girls have BIGGER chests! i thought they were pretty busty in seasons one and two but this is just silly!
even the music is terrible! how??? how did this happen.
you would think that somebody at some point would have said
"Hey guys, you know what, this kinda sucks."
is gunlock any better?

No, Gunlock is just more of the same. Though it's been a while for me, I can still sympathize with your disappointment because I felt it too-- I also vastly prefer the "original" Saiyuuki to Saiyuuki Reload/Gunlock. Quite honestly, to me it seemed they (whoever "they" are) made an attempt to appeal towards a more general shonen-type audience by A.) "Cleaning up" the character designs to look more generic (and less angular like the manga), and B.) Dropping the emphasis on character relationships which was so prevalent in the original (i.e. they dropped the blatant BL-hinting). In the end, to me, Reload & Gunlock was just 4 guys making snarky comments throughout an (eventually) increasingly torturous ongoing plot (sorry if anyone really enjoyed it, but I thought the entire Hazel storyline was a giant, giant drag which killed the series for me). Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Endjiah, but maybe you can save yourself the rental fee at least.

P.S. By "dismal voice casting" I'm assuming you meant the switching of the English voice cast? If so, I can sympathize with you there too, because Saiyuki Reload is actually what triggered me to start watching subs almost exclusively.

Gah! This is one of those "don't even get me started" things. I started buying Saiyuki, I really liked it, and then I too felt the pain of it all going to the monkeys.

Everything good about this series suddenly dried up and it sucked. I have seen all of Gunlock and Reload, I kept hoping the story would END, that the journey wouldn't have been for naught, however I was wrong. I stopped caring enough to see of more was ever animated for some sort of conculsion, although I admit, I would still watch if more were around to see the end.
I wouldn't enjoy it though.

I loved this dub, and I am not a giant dub far by any means, and had to switch over to sub after it switched. The animation turned to crap, the great music was gone, the witty writting, everything. I had stopped reading the manga after a few volumns, so I have no idea if the story started sucking there as well, but originally, I was impressed with how closely the anime followed the manga.
I share your pain as well, but I too can't offer any hope of it getting better.

i was into anime heavy when i was a teenager but as i got older and worked more i just sort of fell out of it, because finding good anime is like looking for black beard's treasure.
i was really excited to get back into it then this.. this.. its just craptastic.
i think this will become one of my "dont get me started!
things.

was the manga any good? that would at least give me something to look forward to.

The big problem with Reload (from what I saw, as I never made it past the first volume) was the writing. Different animation quality and weak music I can cope with, but the characters who made the first series interesting were reduced to generic shonen cliches of the most uninspired kind. Without those characters (or indeed any real characters at all) there's really no reason to watch the anime.

Well, to be honest, most of the time my friends & I were passing around a bottle of wine whilst talking amongst ourselves so the actual anime was relegated by that point to a sort of background noise. We just wanted to finish what we had (previously, so fondly) started, even if we had to self-medicate to get through it. Razz Although this thread makes me want to go back & rewatch the original series now to remember why I liked Saiyuki so much in the first place...

P.S. WonderPets is strangely interesting/cute... I've watched entire episodes a few times myself, and I don't even have kids.

As long as they are 18 or older, I really can't see how that would be a problem at all.

But in all seriousness, the trailer for Saiyuki looked pretty cool, but there was something about the cast that seemed a bit too shojo for me. I might try and watch this series again, but I also have read the manga as well.

i really dont have a problem with big anime boobs as a rule, but it did seem like they sat down and said to themselves.
"hey you know what guys, i think this might kinda suck a little. how are we gonna fix it?"
and then some tool replied
"Hey, the boobs in the first one were only double d's lets make them triple f's and maybe no one will notice that the show isnt that good!!"

The English dub of Reload was the only thing that disappointed me. I hated that the original voice cast from ADV couldn't reprise their roles and that other voice actors were chosen. I'm faithful only to ADV's dub of the series and I still wonder why Geneon couldn't have just contracted ADV to do the ADR production in the first place. For example, FUNimation is letting the original voices of the Slayers TV series do the dub of Slayers Revolution and its sequel, so why couldn't Geneon do the same back when they acquired Saiyuki Reload?
