I was just wondering, how does everyone buy their anime? Do you buy each volume as it comes out? Do you wait for the box set? Do you buy the limited editions or just stick with the regular releases?

Also, why do you buy it the way you do? Are you motivated by personal, emotional, or financial reasons?

For myself, I generally buy series as they come out, picking up the limited edition art boxes and trying to get any other limited edition individual volumes. (like the ones with pencil boards)

My reasons are that I have very little patience and very few box sets come with any of the neat freebies that the art box releases usually include. Also, I like having all the extras, which are sometimes cut out in box sets (I'm glaring at you ADV! Mad ) It's also nice to have all the cover art.

My only exceptions to this are series that I've come into late and series that are going to be extremely long. For those, I usually get the box sets because the individual discs are either too hard to find or too expensive. (Although I'm not sure I can count Inuyasha since the box sets come with such awesome freebies. Jewel shards in the season 3 set!)

I'm cutting off my singles habit since it's simply too expensive, and there isn't enough coming out that really justifies the price tag. Sure, I'm picking up Gaogaigar and Hellsing Ultimate as singles, but I'm not overly worried about everything else. There's plenty else coming out, non anime wise, that I want to see and get, which are all via boxsets anyway. Generally I'm not a fan of newer shows, which tend to get the volume-based releases, so I'm usually fairly fine with it.

I prefer the box set, yes Im cheap, but when you're a 15 years old kid with a crappy job and a lot of hobbies, it's hard to have the kind of money to buy all that stuff.

I pretty much buy like the OP... I preorder individual DVDs for series I really want, for others it's more of a 'get vol. 1 to see how I like it, get the other indivual discs to avoid re-buying vol. 1' kinda thing.

Although, I re-buy vol. 1 a LOT, it seems... I usually get boxsets for series I liked enough to keep the volume 1 disc, but not enough to actually buy the rest prior to the boxset release. The alternate is that I get a great deal on the singles, and re-buy volume 1 with an artbox, becuase I'm a sucker for extra crap. (I fear to figure out how much money I've spent on .hack and its various limited editions.)

My friends enjoy my buying habits tho'... they get a lot of free vol. 1's out of it, as I'm often too lazy or sentimental to sell the extra discs. (In fact, I have a copy of Burst Angel vol. 1 lying on my floor right now that needs a good home. Very Happy )

Usually I buy singles, unless I see a really good deal on boxsets. Also availability would be an issue too. These days though I'm looking to try and get boxsets, that way it won't take me forever to find an entire series.

I try to get single if I watched the series fansub, but I try to get boxset because there so cheap. For example the Gantz Season 1 and 2 boxes can be easily be pick up for 20 dollars a piece, that's a lot of saving.

I usally go for box sets since I have enough money problems as it is and buying indvidually is too expensive. Plus my mom raised me to all ways find the best deals for everything I buy so I go with what saves me money...hell half of my clothes I got at a yard sale for under 5 dollars.

It depends on how badly I want to see a series, or how much I liked it if I saw it fansubbed. I usually get singles releases, but I'm moving towards waiting for box sets more often for financial reasons.

well... I'm a 15 year old kid with a crappy job and a lot of hobbies >.>;;

you don't need to buy an entire series at once...

I also personally hate the anime legends boxsets

@ zombie828: in other words, your really don't like anime

Well color me shocked that there have been this many replies in the short time since I started this thread. I figured, maybe one or two people would throw in their two cents. Thank you everyone who has posted so far!

Except this guy:

Please stop insulting the people who made these anime series you supposedly like and actually pay for them. No one begrudges bargain hunters but not being willing to pay anything is basically just saying "your creation is worthless."

That's my opinion anyway. Also surprised that it took four replies before such a post was made.

Glad to hear I'm not the only person who is obsessed with the extras DuelLadyS. It's too bad they don't more of the art boxes at the end of series huh?

I don't think fansubs are bad and in away I support them but it's people like you who sit on your butt and don't pay for anything that screws up everything I really hope your poor and just can't afford it not that it would excuse you...besides contribute something to the discussion other than that remark and at least something to the anime market...I don't even know why you posted that here when this is about if you buy box sets or individual releases...sorry being off topic.

I always choose singles because they usually come with nice art boxes, booklets and extras.
