A thousand people will point this out, I'm sure, but Luffy was a bad example, because he is not an orphen.

spoiler[We've seen both his Dad and his Grandfather, and both of them are very much alive. Not sure about his mother though.]

He did say missing a father or mother figure, or both.

I don't get the automatic prejudice against Western productions with an anime-influenced style as trying to "fool" the viewer. "...designed to look like anime, but without all that gross anime stuff with the tentacles and robots"? Why can't it just be that the artists saw something that they think looks good, and want to make something that also looks good? That's where this whole anime/manga "look" came from in the first place, after all - a Japanese artist incorporating a Western visual style into his work, but retaining a storytelling style very much grounded in his own culture. Nothing wrong with returning the favor.

It's the inclusion of Prince of Tennis in that list that I don't get. Ryoma's got more relatives than practically anyone. Both parents, a cousin, and a cat. Even his teammates, what few times we see their relatives, seem to have most of their parents. Not too sure about Sakuno, since her grandmother's the focus, but I haven't seen any reason to say she doesn't have both parents.

Unless it was Akutsu Jin, specifically, since he doesn't have a father.

It's really funny when people think that taking something from anime to western cartoons is automatically bad. There were Japanese artists fascinated by style of Disney's animation and French comics and vice versa. "Anime Style" isn't a trademark. I really don't understand so called "fans" who for example attacks "WITCH" because "it's mere imitation of magical girls"- especially when they didn't even check it out.
And what would you say about "Mysterious City of Gold" and "Ulysses 31"?

Um, sorry, am I the only one who thinks you didn't answer that second question right?
He wasnt really asking "Why do american cartoons keep ripping off anime"
He was asking "Why do people automatically asume its a rip off of anime just because it has realistic human perportions and isnt for kiddies?"

:/

I was a fan of the Teen Titans cartoon, especially the seasonal story arcs (er, except that third one with the Hive, which was lame), but I couldn't get into Ben 10 or Avatar. Maybe the only reason I was into Teen Titans to begin with was it was vaguely DC related.

(And no, I won't say "DC Comics", because "Detective Comics Comics" is redundant!)

I'm surprised to click over the ANN and see the same eroge news I just finished writing about being discussed in a civilized manner. Especially after the hate-treatment Time Leap got in X-Button.

Minori has update their site again, they are "perplexing" by the foreigners writing in positively about eroge and wishing to view their site:

Quote:
Why minori blocking foreign accesses?

We are little perplexing now because we received a lot of response about this issue from foreign people.

Now we will tell you the short detail about the reason why blocking you to this website, because of we, all Japanese EROGE makers were facing at the problem, the crisis of "Freedom of speech".

Currently, The bill that allows to limiting the content (It is censorship. Isn't it?) to all EROGEs is being discussed in the Diet because intellectuals and politicians said "Japanese EROGE were being problem and troubled with the foreign country. Therefore we should make EROGE hidden away from foreign country, and also its content should be limited and censored".

Okay, now we trusted the word what they said at once. So we blocked you to make stay away from the trouble.

...Do you like that?

If not, please tell your idea directly to Japanese government and politicians.
(For example, you can write the letter to the administration of Japan directly from here.)
(If you can comprehend Japanese...There is information of the politicians in Japan.)

Otherwise, you just can talk your idea about this issue at your blog or other media to inform the existance of this problem to the public. It would be very helpful for us.

If you do so, we might be able to recover the "Freedom of speech" and the barricade lying in between us would be taken away.

Please help us.

We hope this separation would be only for short moment.

Sincerely. minori Inc.

While the possible new regulations are most certainly troubling since they will go much farther than banning rape, Minori is correct that we must speak up. I disagree with Brian that geoblocking is a good idea, if they want foreigners to understand eroge as a strange but harmless niche (90% will forget about it anyhow) they can't go hiding it behind IP checks. It also discourages and angers the few foreign eroge fans out there. We need to keep writing not only to Minori, but to the EOCS and everyone else we can.

Brian is correct though that doujin is a very separate industry from eroge. Anyone in the EOCS is commercial and uses those distribution channels.

I don't care what animation style a production staff uses as long as the show is made with care. Avatar is one of the better shows I've seen in recent years.

As much as I agree with his general view-point on the question asked (for once), I still get annoyed at how much most people on this site look down on eroges. The last bit where he directly insults them and everyone who plays them is completely unnecessary.

It kinda makes me sad how some people refuse to accept how huge a part of this sub-culture of ours is taken up by the eroge and hentai industry. Most of you may not realize it because you only watch what is handed to you but if you were to actually look into the matter you would see that it is a huge deal.

Not only are eroges a huge part of it, but they also are the basis for some of the more popular anime and manga, in all types of genres. Fate/stay night and most of the Key (Kanon, Air) works are good examples.

I don't get it. You do realize that the serious fans of anime, the focus of this website, are otaku... right? The same otaku almost every editor here seems to hate and bash. I'm not even complaining here anymore. I just don't get it. Maybe that's what I get for coming to a mainstream english-based website.

Although even a quick look at where these things come from will give you an example of how things really are. Even many anime and manga that do not come from eroges tend to deal with the matter if they are a part of the "real life" genre. Genshiken, Lucky Star, Welcome to the NHK. What do you people think when watching those shows? "Oh, this is so not true. That never happens!"? Because you are wrong. That is how it usually is.

Thus, I just don't get it. It would be like if I made a website about RPGs. A whole website just about role-playing games. Like FF, Dragon Quest, and SMT type role playing games. Except I constantly bash JRPGs and the people that play them. I have only praise for WRPGs like Mass Effect. Sure, I'll get some people to join my site that also only like WRPGs, but I'm excluding most of the fanbase with my mockery and biased reporting. I'm denying a huge aspect of the genre and denying the routes of most of it as well.

So please. Someone. Explain?

Hi NanayaDestruct,

I think a lot of people who watch anime or come to this site do not want to be seen as fans of eroges/hentai because of the negative associations—that is, being seen as a loser. Some of them are closet fans of it.

It's also possible that some people are anime fans but do not like hentai/eroges and the people who play them, similar to how some people are film fans but do not like porn.

That's my explanation. Social misfits are an easy target but what can you do?

Brian, obviously very tired wrote:
Even inattentive parents can tell that Avatar is an American-made show designed to look like anime

Anime cry
We need an emoticon like this, but laughing, because tears literally streamed my face when I read this line from all the laughter it's still giving me.

Then "Puritanical Panties" just laid me out flat.

Damn, I haven't laughed this well since, oh wait, last night's news!

At any rate, Brian, you sure do give quite the confidence in the American Parent department, who can't even tell the different between an iPhone and a Blackberry (calling all the "iPhone").

Good article today, that's for sure.

But what's up with this hiatus crap? Can't Zac fill in again? What about Key? Oh well. Enjoy the con and bring me back an Alter PVC figure, please (a t-shirt will be just as good).

I jumped on the 'Avatar' wagon rather late, but when I did I was surprised with what I was missing. After seeing the teaser trailer for the upcoming movie, I'd say I'm fairly excited.

It should go without saying how my skin crawled after reading what 'Rapeman' was about.

Wonder if anyone ever objects to the concept of British animation that's influenced by Czech animation.

Probably because Westerners are puzzled by the concept of visual novels in general, much less one where you have to deliver the right kind of tea to the right girl on the right day to get a pixelated sex scene. Note the lack of dating sims here as well.
