Is this a very underrated anime? I came across it by accident and decided to give it a shot. It's a pretty standard Shoujo about a young girl with grand dreams, with a bit of dark sabotage and a drop of romance in it.
Anyone else on the forums that have seen it?

I've seen 1984 series and 40 episodes of the new one just because someone wrote that only Lady Oscar can beat it
My impression:
Record, freeze and bring it to Sevres.
Show it to everyone pretending to create shoujo to show him how to make it.
It's a very shoujo shoujo, maybe the most shoujo series I've seen. It's "just" a story about young girl making her dreams come true- the creators don't pretend that they want to show something more than it and focus just on story of Maya.
I've never felt such a sympathy for any anime character- most of the anime girls are sugar coated apple pies from chain confectioners- too sweet to eat, when Maya is a homed made cake. Her problems, dreams, relations with others are very natural, so it was easy for me to fell that I really want her to become and actress. This is a story that really could happen and that makes this series so charming and touchable.

I've only seen a couple of episodes and I can't really tell completely yet on how the story will unfold. On a side note, is there a dvd release of it which I can purchase? I don't understand japanese enough to find a non subtitled version and watch it. The show is from 2005, so there should be some dvd sets out there, I just can't seem to find any.

I've seen parts of each series, and from what I've seen I think the original's writing is a good deal tighter. For example, the first five minutes of the original series is stretched into the first episode of the new series. And yet, you still understood perfectly what was going on in that brief intro. Basically it didn't have to spell out everything for you.

It wasn't released in USA, but Crunhyroll picked it up. It's hard to get fansubs- I can just tell that they exists and translator decided to finish them for those who don't live in America.

I have read some volumes of the manga as seen bits and pieces of the anime.
I gave up on the first series after 3 or 4 episodes. I might revisit it somewhen, but I don't really feel like it right now. I didn't like the writing very much, everything felt rushed and the drama of the manga often fell flat. Maybe because it looks pretty bad too. The animation is clumsy and low level, and the characters often look off. Plus I hate that OP sequence. What kind of dance is that!? There's always something awkward about dancing anime characters in 80's stuff, but that's downright ridiculous!
Then I saw the OVA from the late 90's and I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It's well written, looks good and, ultimately, it has some of the best voice acting I've seen (I mean, heard ) in any anime.
I haven't seen the new series yet, but I definitely want to watch it. From the pictures I've seen it looks a lot like the OVA and that's definitely a plus.
