As the first volume of Azumanga Daioh has been re-released in the anniversary edition or whatever it is, the new artwork that was mentioned in previous articles is also available for viewing. I came across this on Sankaku Complex, and I figured I might as well post this picture here as the site isn't exactly safe for work, and people might just want to avoid it in general.

are links to more images of the sort, in case people want to check it out further.

Also, in case this is already common knowledge, sorry for making this post. The posts on Sankakucomplex are a few days old after all. I just wasn't sure if people were aware, and figured I should mention it.

We're entitled to our opinions, so I'll simply say this: They can keep the new version all to themselves.

I prefer the taste of Classic Coke.

Yeah, I like the look of old Azumanga. The new character designs are too Yotsuba-y. I like Yotsuba, but they both have their own distinct flavors.

The new chapters look like Yotsuba because that’s how he’s been drawing for the past several years.

Were you expecting his art style to magically revert back to how it used to be or something?
I mean hell I’d like that too, despite preferring Yotsuba&’s style, if only for the sake of continuity but its not like it’s that easy.

To each their own, I liked the new chapters and look forward to more.

I wasn't expecting his style to revert to the old way. That would pretty much defeat the purpose of him re-drawing it all. But compared to his style when he started out and the new style, I prefer the old one.

Go fetch a copy of Ah! My Goddess vol. 1 and you'll find yourself can't even recognize Belldandy (who wasn't even half as beautiful compared to her design between volumes 20-25). Cool

Ditto, though personally I prefer the style he used in the early volumes of Yotsuba&!. His most current artwork just seems kind of flat and lifeless to me, both in the redrawn AD and recent chapters of Y&!.

I think that's probably why I'll never buy the AMG manga, or probably even the original OVA (besides that the manga's so long and the OVA's so short). I like the current designs, and it's weird going back to the first ones and seeing Belldandy in her "Love is a Battlefield" backup dance costume. And then you see the intermediate ones and watch the character designs evolve. I wouldn't be surprised if the manga's going on 10 years from now and looks like a Picaso.

Cool

What.... buy manga of Oh My Goddess???

Okay, put the steak sauce down. You've had enough.
Wink

I won't even buy the series, let alone the manga.

At any rate, I found a few strips of AzuDa manga online (not the whole thing, just someone's favorite strips) and there are some differences between it and the series designs, especially Osaka (*sigh*).

It just gives me chills knowing that someday, someone will probably say "Hey! Let's turn the new version into a series!"

Oh, the humanity.

I dunno, I like the Azu cast in his new style. His current style is a lot crisper, rounder and more attractive, and he has a better sense of proportion.
I don't think people should complain anyway, the old version is still gonna be there regardless of whether he redraws it.

I agree with this, as I'd love to have the new version to go along with my older omnibus. I really like his clean and simple art-style.
