Eiichiro Oda is a master comic book writer.
All who have stuck with One Piece so far have observed how the Straw Hat crew grew both physically and character wise, how incredibly long plots unwinded with the grace of a flower slowly opening its petals; we've seen old heroes and villains back, we've laughed, we cried, and importantly, we've all noticed the wonderful references.

Yes, Eiichiro Oda is a man who knows his American and Japanese culture and stick little interesting tidbits on it here and there, especially when it comes to character. In the like that... say, White Beard's name in One Piece is Edward Newgate, with Edward being a possible reference to Edward Teach, the real life Blackbeard, and Newgate probably refering to Newgate prison in London, where the infamous Captain Kidd was held. Stuff like. You would be surprised how many these easter eggs are to be found.

How about we list them.

You know;
Aokiji is based visually on the late action movie star Yusaku Matsuda,

Kizaru is based on Kunie Tanaka,

Laffit, the tapdancing emmisary used by Blackbeard, looks very much like a frightening mix between Marylin Manson and Alex from A Clockwork Orange,

And so on.
Add your own.

I'll bite. Smile

Super Pirate Geek here noticed that Alvida (depending on which translation you read, her name changes) was the name of the Goth pirate mentioned by Saxo Grammaticus in his history of the Norse people. She's also known as Alfhild, Alfhilda, and Alwida, depending on who translates ol' Saxo.

Anyway, the real Alwida was so beautiful that her father locked her in her room with a snake and a viper to guard her chastity. Prince Alf of Scandinavia came and defeated her pets, which entitled him to her hand in marriage. Alwida decided that she'd rather turn pirate instead and set out to wreak havoc on the north seas with a band of likeminded women. Eventually Alf hunted her down and defeated her and she married him.

Poor Alfhild.
