The thing that brought me to make anime my hobby was Rumiko Takahashis Ranma 1/2, and while disappointed in Inu Yasha (and well, maybe growing up from that kind of anime/manga), i am still curiously waiting for her new project.
Today should be a release of her new manga (and you can say 100% sure there will be anime about it in a year, no matter what the manga is about...) http://therumicworld.com/ Anyone else waiting for this event? Share your expressions about the manga after the first chapter is published. (Damn, what timezone and time they want to release it at? Refreshing the page every 10 minutes barely helps ) [EDIT: Moving this to the Manga forum. -TK] |

Depending upon where you are at is what time of the day that it will come out. Currently Japan is 16 hours ahead of PST time, which means that it is 13 hours ahead of EST time, so whenever they plan to release it in Japan at that time of day is when we'll get it over here.

Not a big fan of her but a simultaneous release is a really interesting idea, I hope we'll see this sort of thing more often.

I assumed it would be there by now, but maybe they're still finishing it up. According to this article, it seems like they don't have much time to translate and everything, and considering 1st chapters are usually pretty long, they might be running a little late.

First chapter is up on the main site
Okay, let me just say this to start See the main character there? The guy with the blazing red hair? He's a shinigami.... He also can't be seen in shinigami mode but can be seen when he's human... Oh boy, here we go.... |

Fees to get sent to wherever those spirits go is pretty cheap. 50 yen for discounted deals and 500 yen for evil spirits? Wow. This could get interesting.

edit, from the website: "A childhood encounter gave Sakura Mamiya the power to see ghosts. Then one day a mysterious event changed her life...". Seriously, just look up bleach if you don't already know what it is. |

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. So it was an event and not innate, and a girl can see ghosts not a guy. I can't possibly call that a deal breaking difference at this point. And the first episode took place in a high school on top of it. But, there is a slight chance that perhaps, if the girl runs out of allowance or forgets her wallet, things will get interesting. I'll still love her for Maison Ikkoku, but I'm starting to not want to look at her stuff anymore. I think she does better when her main-main is a guy personally. I think I'll just re-read Maison Ikkoku again. On another note, the simultaneous release thing is a nice idea, hopefully it'll be utilized by other series in the future. "Others" meaning Liar Game or something by Naoki Urawsawa. |

The first chapter was fun, though average. No need to hate on it just because it sounds like Bleach. The concept sounds similar, but I don't think the similarities are that strong. It doesn't matter whether a concept is original or not, what matters is how it's executed. I found the idea of having to pay to send the dead to rest kinda funny. The idea of her having to pay him every time he has to fight could be amusing. Will he get a different weapon depending on how much she pays?
I'll follow it for a few weeks to see where it goes. It wasn't terribly exciting, but it was decent diversion. |

Some thoughts on Rin-Ne Chapter 1:
It looks like RT is going to write a more serious story rather than a flat-out comedy. Chapter 1 had some funny moments, such as child Sakura getting "noogied" by the female Shinigami for addressing her like an old woman rather than a young one, high-school Sakura running into Rin-ne thinking him a ghost, and the ghostly stalker who wouldn't leave Sakura alone because she was the only girl who'd ever spoken to him, alive or dead. And Rin-ne himself seems to be a bit of a klutz as a Shinigami, what with him getting eaten by the chihuahua ghost he was supposed to help. But it seemed to me the comedy bits were incidental to the story rather than the focus. So I guess we'll just have to see whether she steers this toward more comedy or more drama. Or will she keep this as a "dramedy." Chapter 1 gave me the distinct feeling of "Inuyasha crossed with Bleach." The IY similarity lies in a relatively ordinary modern-day Japanese schoolgirl finding herself tangled up in the realm of Japanese myth and legend. The Bleach aspect comes in with Sakura seeing ghosts and meeting up with Shinigami (including a red-headed one, no less) and their otherworldly realm that looks sort of like the realm of the living, even to using earthly money. I'm sure this "offspring" will turn out to be quite a distinct story, though. It's an intriguing story setup, for sure. The two lead characters have a more mature appeal; both seem pretty level-headed people so far. And the wheel of reincarnation is something new for RT so it'll be interesting to see how she works that into the story. But there's no clue yet as to what sort of villain or conflict RT will come up with to move this story along. It seems Sakura's childhood encounter with what turned out to be a female Shinigami not only left her able to see ghosts but may also have immunized her against Shinigami hypnosis by Rin-ne. And left her more comfortable with otherworldly stuff than most people. It also apparently isn't all that hard for living humans to migrate across to the Shinigami realm under the right conditions, and then return. Also, it's interesting that payment of Earthly money to a Shinigami allows him to buy useful stuff in the Shinigami realm to help lay ghosts to rest. I wonder if RT will make a running joke out of him hitting Sakura up for money to put down ghosts. (It was amusingly odd, though, that Rin-ne thought 500 yen was a great deal of money. But maybe money is harder to come by and goes farther in the other realm.) Also, that putting down an evil spirit costs so much more than putting down a good spirit. (Does this ghost-money business reflect some Japanese custom, legend or belief?) And the chapter immediately raises some questions, mainly about Rin-ne. Just how is Rin-ne "sort of" a Shinigami, anyway? Certainly, his cloak seems to have something to do with it. And it's not clear why he's enrolled in high school, since he's hardly ever in the class. I guess coming chapters will tell. As to the presentation itself, I wish the sound-effect translations were easier to read. Maybe they will be easier on the eye in the eventual printed version but in the online version, some are really hard to make out even in the full-screen mode. Still, I'm glad Viz took the trouble to translate the FX and maybe they will improve the FX typography. At least they didn't replace the Japanese FX with English. And from what I've heard, the Viz translation is a good one. Lastly, they are presenting the story unflipped. Good for them. The real significance here is the simultaneous release of each chapter in Japan and the USA. Viz obviously came to realize that this manga would be scanlated all over the USA unless they preemptively put up their own authorized English-language translation. And they must believe the online version won't kill off sales of the printed volumes. Also, the North American regional restriction required by Viz' Japanese partner shouldn't seriously hamper overseas fans. I've seen at least half a dozen different methods on the Internet for getting around the online restriction. (^_*) |

Okay, something I've found interesting. Chapter one I believe was released last week. This series is running in Weekly Shonen Sunday. However, it says on Rumic World that chapter two will be available May 2nd. That's this Saturday. I thought they were running in sync with the Japanese release, what happened? They're already a week behind.

Well, it's Golden Week, meaning there won't be another chapter next week...so maybe they're just releasing it a bit later so the gap doesn't seem as long?? |

RIN-NE Chap. 2 - Legend of the Weather Hutch
In this chapter, Rin-ne and Sakura find themselves faced with a haunted cellphone number causing a problem for one of Sakura’s classmates. Rin-ne invents a legend about an old weather station on the school grounds where tbe classmate can leave an offering of food and money to win relief from her problem. Turns out the classmate’s new cellphone got assigned a number that once belonged to an acquaintance of a boy who died in an accident on his way to some kind of meeting, and he keeps calling it from the spirit realm to set up the meeting. This chapter may have provided a clue to the plot hook that’ll drive this story. I got the impression that both Rin-ne and Sakura have had to become very self-sufficient because of their special abilities. I also think Rin-ne does his Shinigami thing as a duty imposed on him, rather than by his own preference. He’s sort of a “reluctant Shinigami,” who’s duty-bound to eke out a subsistence living by dealing with the errant dead. And so far the indications are that he’s always had to work alone. But now he’s run into a regular human girl who can see him when he’s “on the clock” as a Shinigami and even work with him in both the earthly and spirit realms. I got the impression this is the first time such a thing has ever happened to him. I think it’s a first for Sakura, too, finding another person who can see and interact with ghosts, and who in addition can enter and leave the spirit realm at will. Still, she’s not quite sure whether it’s a good idea to be involved with him. But however reluctantly, she’s now embroiled in his affairs. I think this is the focus of the plot – what happens between two “loners” who find themselves thrust into an uncertain relationship that’s a first for both of them. That being said, I still can’t figure out whether RT plans this to be a comedy or a serious story. It could go either way. Both main characters so far seem very level-headed, too mellow to carry the slapstick comedy of a Ranma or UY, or the angst-y action/romance of an Inuyasha. And there’s too much fantasy for a straight-up romantic comedy like Maison Ikkoku. Further, readers still haven’t gotten any definite information about Rin-ne’s background, or how he came to his odd status as “sort of” a Shinigami with the mission of rescuing spirits who strayed from the wheel of reincarnation. Likewise, we learn nothing new about Sakura’s background. We did learn that Rin-ne becomes an “astral” being who’s able to deal with ghosts and the spirit world when he dons his Haori robe, but otherwise he seems to be a normal human. And we still have no hint of the central conflict or villain in this story. And it’s still unclear why Rin-ne has such an exaggerated idea of the value of the yen. Today, the value of one yen is about equivalent to one US cent. But from the currency’s creation in 1872 through the 1920s, the yen was roughly equivalent to about 50 US cents, with extensive yen coinage in gold and silver. (This would make the 500 yen Rin-ne asked of Sakura in Chapter 1 equivalent to a hefty $250 at that old exchange rate rather than the $5 at current rates.) The yen devalued during the 1930s and through WW II and hit its low point of exchange value in the postwar years 1950-1980 when it was worth about a third of a US cent. So I’d guess that Rin-ne and others in the Shinigami realm fell out of touch with the human financial world sometime in the late 19th or early 20th Century and stayed out of touch for a considerable length of time before Rin-ne’s entry into this story. As in the first chapter, this one had its funny bits – the gym teacher’s reaction to Rin-ne’s deadpan joke that he’d go to hell if he spent money to buy new clothes, the tin-can payphone for contacting ghosts, the classmates’ reaction when the weather-station offering vanished before their eyes and Sakura berating Rin-ne for pulling off a con job on her classmates, the very idea of a haunted cellphone number, and the last panel where Sakura says she’d better keep a lot of change with her for future encounters with Rin-ne.
