I always figured this title is like a parody towards most yuri tropes and a jab towards the most outlandish shounen action series (and it's still a shame this is not an anime series yet). I still plan on buying it though.

Yet another show with a serious type character and naive character, that hasn't been done before.

I read my copy, and it's one of the few manga that's genuinely funny, or at least made me laugh out loud. Most comedies are often filled with stadard cliched jokes, this one is such a huge relief as it's full of great little moments. Maybe the storyline is standard (and what can anyone expect from story elements being done to death?), but it's filled with a kind of energy that's quite enough to make it stand on its own. And from what I hear, it does get better in future volumes, so let's not be badmouthing it so soon

Thus the reason I'm checking it out. There has to be a reason why Erica Friedman really, REALLY enjoys it, and she tends to have good tastes in certain titles. But hey, it's only the first volume, and they sometimes not have the most amazing opening. Maybe his opinion will change with later volumes.

Quick question, but why are you cynical over this?

My reviews are my opinions, just like this person's. I like action, comedy and the characters that fill Hayate x Blade. This reviewer does not. It's also possible that this reviewer is not familiar with Hayashiya Shizuru's style, and was expecting something completely different that what the book is, while I'm a long time fan of the artist and have been following her work from her days as a doujinshi artist through all of her manga.
Make your own decisions! Okazu's running a Hayate x Blade contest - get a copy of the first volume and decide for yourself if it's the funniest manga you've read in years, or not.
Be your own person. Don't let the opinions of anyone, including me, sway you. Whether you like anything or not is up to you.
Cheers,
Erica

Oh, don't get me wrong! There are a couple titles and one-shots you've blasted that I've enjoyed (can't recall which ones though), and I know for a fact that Carlo is pretty harsh reviewer in the manga side.

Honestly it'd be nice if they reviewed the rest of the available series because the story become a lot more clear and complex as it goes on. and it continues to remain hilarious as well. I think judging it on the first volume is a bit rash. Give it chance? (:
