Simply put, an excellent review. I bought this set and came away with exactly the same impressions.
I'm quite interested to see how the second arc turns out.

Not quite. I bought it as well and this series is actually ok. And the dubbing a a lot better than it seems. Sure the story needs some fine tuning, but this review also need fine tuning as well.

I would give this story below a "C"... okay, maybe only a C-, but it's basically a monster-of-the-week format with extremely poor characterization. The way the villains are disposed of at the end is pathetic, and the whole "it's only just beginning!" thing at the end is so cliched, even if there is a sequel (which I never watched, I had better things to do).
And while I like the animation to a certain degree, did anyone else notice the precipitous drop in quality in the final episode? or was the version I downloaded (and long ago deleted, fansubs=previews, and boy did I not want this series) just bad?

Hmm, well, I think the letter scores average out to it being an "OK" series. It's well removed from anything I'd judge as good, but it kept my interest and wasn't bad. Plus, the sets aren't that expensive, so it's not like I'm needlessly wasting money on an average series (which, honestly, is what this is).

Isn't this another show where singles buyers got screwed? Something like if you bought the 3 singles that ADV released before losing the license, you're still missing 1 episode if you buy the 2nd season from Funimation?

I really enjoy this show despite its obvious flaws. I'm so grateful that Funimation picked it up. Frankly, it was the characters (and the music) that hooked me, especially Komaki and Daigo; personally, I wish those two had a lot more screen time.

It is, but the one episode is a throwaway recap episode so only purists will care.

It was a good review, in fact one of the best ones I've seen on this site. Mind you I still had fun watching Tokyo Majin and am waiting for part 2.
