Morning Musume, January 2008, Yokohama Arena.

I can completely understand some anime fans' concerns about Morning Musume being a guest group for AX 2009. But consider this:

-- Some initial reaction in this forum characterizes Morning Musume as having no connection to anime. Note, though, that Momusu member Koharu Kusumi has long been an anime voice-over and has recorded many an anime theme song. Further, Morning Musume's junior groups have been heavily involved in anime themes. Buono!, for example, has sung Shugo Chara beginning and ending themes among their discography.

-- Fans of Morning Musume are also somewhat unfairly stereotyped as hyperactive, juvenile geeks, the infamous "otaku" and "wota" crowd. However, in the eight Morning Musume shows I have attended, including the latest shows in Nogoya and Yokohama n January, there was a high percentage of girls and whole families. In fact, the Morning Musume fan base is 70 percent female as is the Hello! Project Fan Club. The female audience tends to buy and listen to the CDs, the male side tends to dominate, somewhat vociferously, the concert scene.

Having attended my first Anime Expo last year, and not even being an avid fan of most anime titles, the haunting and beautiful music of anime has attracted my attention. The music acts last year, including Gaagaling and Shokotan, were great and Morning Musume might even be a notch better.

Skeptics, please just give this a chance. Hello! Project is the greatest all-female musical company n the world, and one of the best groups, period. I think the AX 2009 fans are in for a very real and unexpected treat, a historic moment as Morning Musume finally makes an appearance in the U.S., something thought impossible only a year or so ago.
