I thought this was an interesting topic, somewhat offtopic but pertain to the manga reading fan. For the people who read manga, what are some american comic that you are collecting and your favorite? If you have smething negative to say, just don't say it at all.

For me, I stop collecting comic (spider-man, witchblade, sandman) for a long time, but I really enjoy picking up Street Fighter (by Udon), Bone & Megatokyo. Street Fighter have stay true to the game and has some of the best art/fight scene ever. I might pick up those marvel essential title since they're being collected. The complete one volume of bone (collect all the TPB, about 1300 page) just came out and it's probably one of my favorite read at this moment.

I mainly like comics with a great storyline, so that's why Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is a the top of my list. Anything else with a well developed and intresting story is also on my list.

While most American comic art doesn't appeal to me, every once in a while I find a book out there with a style that I like. Also, if it has butt kicking girls, I'd get it too. That's why most of Top Cow's comics appeal to me. I really like some of their art, and some of their titles, like Tomb Raider, and Magdalena, feature kick butt females as the lead character. Usually though this comics, as comics do, load itself with fanservice for the guy targeted audience. For this reason I very rarely get them, if at all.

I really like anything by Frank Miller (Dark Knight Returns, 300, Ronin are my favorites). I'm reading some Vertigo series at the moment (100 Bullets, Y the Last Man), and I've read and loved Sandman, Swamp Thing (I actually read this before it was collected by Vertigo) and Transmetropolitan from them in the past to name a few. Bone of course is near the top of my list, and I also like Cerebus alot. Some Darkhorse stuff (The Goon, Usagi Yojimbo, Grendel) that's creator owned is great. I also have recently read Milkman Murders and Conan, which are both quite good. I'm also getting into some indepentent comics at the moment (besides the ones I mentioned above).

As with movies I tend to read comics that I like. Don't really like superhero comics (of any kind, that includes manga Wink) so I tend to steer away from Marvel and DC stuff. Neil Gaiman's comics are okay. Frank Miller's Sin City comics are excelent. Lately been into Artesia by Mark Smylie. Don't know if he's American, though Anime smile + sweatdrop. Over all I read much more manga than I read American comics. Manga is cheaper but that doesn't make it always better.

When I was younger, I used to get Sonic the Hedgehog a lot because I used to always play the video games. A few years ago, I read some of the Justice League comics.

Back in my junior high and early high school days, I was a REALLY big supporter of the Marvel Comics universe, particularly with The X-Men, Spiderman, and a few of everything else.

However, after seeing such large piles build up in my room, I decided it wasn't really worth it anymore, and I stopped collecting them.

I still have oodles of those Comic Book Cards with the illustrations on the front and while the back had their power attributes, first comic appearance, a back story, and their physical stats.

(Though it still sounds weird to me that Wolverine is 5'3", meaning my mother is as tall as he is Shocked , thank goodness they got Hugh Jackman to play him in the movies though; an X-cellent choice, if I do say so myself Razz)

I'm not really into "licensed characters" when it comes to American comics, so superheroes and comics-based-on-TV/games/movies are out for me. I tend to follow creators/artists more than actual franchises ... I like practically everything Derek Kirk Kim spouts out of his crazy little mind. Chynna Clugston, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Kazu Kibuishi, Sonny Liew, Becky Cloonan, and Jill Thompson (when in faux-manga or chibi-Endless mode) are all awesome too.

Eh .... I just noticed a lot of the artists I mentioned work in styles with varying degrees of manga influence. I guess you just can't escape the Japanese-ness of things Anime hyper

I'm big on the Hernandez Brothers of Love and Rockets fame (if you think you like Strangers in Paradise, well, it's just a copy of the Maggie and Hopey stories in L&R.) Dan Clowes of Eightball comics (best known for Ghost World) is also great. R. Crumb is one of the geniuses of modern comics. Jill Thompson is good in any mode-check out her recently released Scary Godmother collection. Grant Morrison does some splendid work. Dave Sim of Cerebus is like the little girl who has the little curl right in the middle of her forehead... when he's good he's very, very good, but when he's bad he's horrid. Lorenzo Mattoti is a visionary European comics artist who's worth checking out.

I read funnies like Garfield, Calvin and Hobbes, Opus, and Bloom County. I also read stuff like Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, Preacher, and Ninja Turtles! I hate superheros with superpowers that "save the day", that's so overplayed a lot.

I'd like to disagree with people who say that all superhero comics are crap. Sure, pretty much all of the Marvel and DC universe books are just crass commercialism, but there have been some VERY good superhero comics out there. Watchmen, Astro City, and currently Ex Machina (by the guy who does Y the Last Man) all tell mature, intelligent stories. And self-contained, too - something that works against otherwise excellent comics like Starman and The Dark Knight Returns.

Other than my superhero weakness, I'm much more of an indie comics guy. Love and Rockets, Eightball, Craig Thompson, Hate, Robert Crumb, Will Eisner...good stuff. Lately I've been getting into Cerebus, and I've been splitting the cost with one of my friends, so it isn't so intimidating. I'm only a couple volumes in so I haven't gotten to the weird misogynistic stuff, but I've read excerpts from the prose portions of Reads, and they've been hilarious.

Yea, there are some great superhero comics out there, but I can't say I read too many of them. I would tell everyone to read 1602 from Marvel. Its by Neil Gaiman and its basically the Marvel universe in the year 1602. I'll buy a Batman collection if its by an author I like though. Anyway, I'll look into Ex Machina. Hopefully it will have some of the one liners that make Y great.
But is Will Eisner really considered Indie? Thats kind of weird.

I used to collect a lot of the Marvel titles until the early nineties when they started caring more about "limited-edition-instant-collectors-items" rather than concentrate on a decent story. I've bought a few graphic novels from time to time, but not too often.

Lately I have be an an Oni Press junkie. I've got Blue Monday, Hopeless Savages, Courtney Crumrin, an issue of Barry Ween and some one-shots. One of these days I'm going to have to get Whiteout, which was the first Oni Press title that I have heard of.

I've also got Gold Digger and Neotopia from Antarctic Press. I was wandering around the convention hall in the last minutes of ComicCon, and found myself at their booth. They seemed like decent folk and they were eager to dump their wares at a discount, so I was more than happy to make a purchase.

The Powers series by Brian Michael Bendis is pretty good also.

I always considered him indie, he's got the same asthetic. But I guess a lot of his work is published by DC, so maybe not...

Oh yeah, Queen and Country is great, too. I'm not as familiar with it as I should be, but the storylines I have read are fantastic.
