I never watched the show, but that is slightly impressive that the show has almost been running for two years now. I've noticed new anime tends to last maybe a year or year and a half, depending on the series.

My best friend is obsessed with the show (I'm pretty sure the only american to be), I'm sure he's going to be really sad when he's hears it.

No need to be sad, I'm sure they'll make another 100 episode series in another decade or so.
Thus is the neverending saga of Gegege no Kitaro.
That is unless they kill off Medama Oyaji and have Neko-Musume propose to Kitaro and Nezumi Otoko find himself the recipient of a huge inheritance in the last episode or something, hah!

Someone should license it for R1. Or fansub it at the very least...

Honestly, do you really think that would be a good idea? You know there's a reason no one ever fansubbed past the first episode: Not enough interest.
It's 100+ episodes. It's based on traditional Japanese monster folklore. It's target audience is little kids and adults who are nostalgic for the versions they saw when they were little kids.
This is the type of show where it either gets a TV deal or it doesn't get licensed.

Yeah. Animax-Asia is rerunning their dub of series 4 at the moment. Wonder if they'll pick up series 5.
