Okay, sorry about the vague thread title, but what I want to complain about is hard to properly explain in only a few words.
When I highlight text with an intent to tag (i.e. quote, spoiler, bold et cetera), and then tag it, the cursor (and therefore my point of view) jumps to the top of the text box. This causes me to lose my place, which is the annoying part. I should be able to bold text or insert spoiler tags without having to scroll down after each and every use of the tag system.
Naturally this isn't a problem in short posts, but it gets very annoying in larger ones. You all know how I sometimes like to make big long posts, and considering I bold people's usernames and the titles of Anime and Manga, it can get tedious for me. But I've been having problems even in the current Most Heroic Tournament (especially since Key insisted that votes should be in bold), although as the weeks pass it will get easier.
I know it is a minor complaint, but it does grate on my nerves, especially if I am in a hurry and yet I have to waste time trying to find where I previously was. So, is there anyway to fix it? It would make medium-to-long posts just so much easier to type up.
Thankyou.

Why use the select-then-button method anyway? You can type the [x] [/x] tags yourself much quicker.
Okay, that doesn't really solve the problem, only avoids it.

Copy and pasting also helps, although only for a single type of tag. If there are two or more types (say bold and quote) then that method is far more difficult, and I have to retroactively change one of them.
I know it is a minor complaint, but it can get really annoying, and it seems so trivial to be able to change. Unless it is embedded in the software, though.

Have you tried using a different browser to see if it is browser behaviour? In mine (chrome) it jumps to the bottom if I highlight text then click one of the format buttons.
Thankfully the old Chrome bug where text would appear and disappear as you typed or tried to edit has disappeared.

Well, I used Google Chrome for this post, and yes the problem went away. So it is to do with the browser. Unfortunately, I got the very bug you mentioned, though to be fair I haven't updated Chrome in, oh, a while. I was going to say a couple of months, but I really have no idea.
Anyway, thankyou for your help. I guess I'll just have to live with it. Either that or see if Firefox can be "persuaded" to do what I want.

There are a surprising number of built-in configuration settings for Firefox and even more that can be added manually using the about:config method. There are also lots of plugins that can change behavior in many ways. I'm not sure how important Firefox is in your view, but you might want to do some google searching or check the Firefox forums to see if anything looks like it might help you. I've noticed that newer versions of phpBB don't seem to have this problem in Firefox 3.0.x, which originally led me to believe it might simply be a phpBB issue. In any case I simply type out all my BBCode tags and never bother with the buttons.
