Wow, I think it's cool that Yazawa is offering this. However, I don't think it'd be worth it to fly over Japan for these lessons. It seems like they are going to teach how how to draw 'manga-style like everyone else' and not develop your own style. Although if there were classes on just using tones or inking that would be cool. It has really simple art to help you focu on the most important aspect- storytelling. Storytelling is the most important thing for comics but people seem to gloss over it. I am going to be taking two comics classes next semester, I really can't wait

Nao Yazawa has been pretty good about connecting with fans outside of Japan for a long time now and I really appreciate that. I hope the online classes pan out, as it seems like a fun idea.

You'd be surprised by how important art actually is in the comic industry. Art as a profession is actually a very competitive and even stressful career choice. It is very easy for someone to completely reject even the most masterful pieces of artwork. I myself would like to draw comics (doesn't have to be manga, I have my own style anyway), but I also know how stress-inducing such a profession would be, so I may not actually pursue it in the end. |
