Very interesting news. I wonder if this is to cash-in on the eventual BD release of Arrietty?

I think they'd do Howl's first in all honesty. US BD releases are trailing Japan by 6-12 months. They generally haven't skipped the order of the releases, btw...

... and I still have to get Nausicaa on Blu ray!

Howl's is actually the one I'm looking forward to next on Blu ray.

When and if they get around to releasing Only Yesterday on Blu ray I'll probably snap that one up, too. Disney's been sitting on it for so long and I doubt they'll bother with a domestic BD release after they passed on the DVD. It's a shoo-in that Only Yesterday will have English subtitles like the other movies have had so far on both Japanese DVD and Blu ray.

I'll double dip for Laputa! I have the original Disney DVD version, and was even considering double-dipping to get the newer DVD because of the slip cover... Well, good thing I waited!

I wonder why it won't be getting the gold border like Ponyo and Nausicaa? Assuming that it is the final cover art.

I'm with yeah, I too would love to see that one get either a DVD or Blu-ray release in USA.

i still need to get Ponyo & Nausicaa on Blu-ray, along with these new titles hoping there'll be blu-ray releases for the other Ghibli films in the US.

I believe that has been the plan: release a "recent" Ghibli film, and piggyback a couple of older films.

ah, FINALLY. I almost imported whisper of the heart with a mass order i did a few weeks ago. I'm glad I got Shinkai's newest instead and waited for this. Though, $40... My import price wouldn't have been that much higher for once.

Whisper of the Heart is my favourite Ghibli movie. I really love the rural town scenery. I'm ecstatic that it's getting a BD.

I've also never seen Laputa, so I'm looking quite forward to that, if only to finally watch it.

Some of you are awaiting a US Blu Ray of Howl's? I honestly fought myself to stay awake for that movie.

I'm eagerly awaiting a Blu Ray of Totoro and even though I don't think anyone has the US/NA distrubution rights to it, Mononoke Hime, which would look GORGEOUS on an HD TV from a Blu Ray.

Oh especially this! Another reason is to get a better cover, because the North American one is so bland... I just hope the licensing gets sorted out.

Day one purchases for me, and I also consider Whisper of the Heart as my favorite Ghibli movie. Looking forward to adding these Blu-Rays to my collection!

Surprised Whisper of the Heart was the piggy-backed choice this time around. It's one of the main three I waiting for though, the only version I have is DVD-R copy I recorded off of TCM when they played it many moons ago. Also waiting on Spirited Away and Totoro but I consider the Disney DVD of Castle in Sky I already have to be adequate and won't bother double-dipping on that yet, unless someone offers a truly insane deal.

yay! more ghibli blu-rays to buy!

so out of all the ghibi blu-rays currently available (that I can see on Amazon Japan anyway), the one's we need left are:

My Neighbor the Yamadas
Howl's Moving Castle
Earthsea

....hm.... just by going how big of impact a couple of those films made financially here, something tells me that Disney's not in any rush to put those titles out again. Howl's Moving Castle aside. that might get its own special release like how Nausicaa was instead of piggybacking. [/over-analyzing]

too bad they didn't dump Earthsea out on bluray back when they were slipping it into a few theaters, I wanted the bluray for my shelf so I skipped on the DVD release they did. (I should probably just bite the bullet and get it though...)

I just want Kiki's Delivery Service and Porco Rosso for blu-ray the most.

Yeah I'm going to be picking these up for sure! I'll probably buy all the Disney Ghibli Blu-Rays. Except for the Yamatas. Really looking forward to getting Kiki, though. Still my favorite Ghibli movie.

I'll be double-dipping for the BD release of Whisper Of The Heart, as I already have Disney's DVD version. I did the same for Nausicaa and have no regrets. I feel the BD releases have been well worth the money, not only for the Ghibli titles but Disney's own older titles (Lady And The Tramp, Pinocchio, Sleeping Beauty, etc). If, and/or when, Disney releases BD versions of additional Ghibli titles, like Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Totoro, and Princess Mononoke, I'll double-dip for those as well.
