Learn Japanese.

You're welcome.

Good idea. Wanna pay for the courses for me? It costs just a tad more than 15 tankouban and a DVD.

So, Viz owes you a translation you approve of, or you expect tuition to an advanced Japanese course, instead of learning with your own initiative?

Neither one. Just serving you a different flavour of your own dish. Enjoy.

If you don't know Japanese, how do you know that the translation is wrong?

If you know that the translation is wrong, but you do know the correct translation, you know what was intended to be said. The mangaka has successfully communicated his meaning. Nothing was lost.

The Japanese version remains intact in all its linguistic purity, with no loss in meaning to anyone.

The issue is dead. The end.

I'm a subbie. If Ai was saying "the Full Monty," I would have heard Megumi Hayashibara say it. And yes, this sort of thing was in the sub track, too.

What did she actually say?

Man, this is the most time I've spent on this issue in the last two years or so (when I responded to an E-mail from Trish Ledoux asking what my problem was). I can't find the Kanji or Romaji for the anime script, and the line is a bit different from the manga ("Youta ni hadaka madamada doku dakara na."--"Nudity is still too much for you, Youta."), but you most definitely don't hear "fuuru manti."

The conversation about getting an apology for VGAi is over.

Everyone's made their points, but the argument continues with nothing new being added. It's completely pointless to continue.

Any further debate about this will, at the very minimum, be deleted, and possibly result in a temp or permanent ban.

If someone wants to continue this discussion, start a new thread in the manga forum, and add something new to it. Any new thread that repeats what has already been said here will also at the very minimum, be deleted, and possibly result in a temp or permanent ban.

On catchphrase/endings, I like how the Squidgirl sub squidified words to work it in. It was very silly, but very silly was, of course, called for.

On honorifics, in Japanese school dramas, the honorifics shifting from same class to older class to younger class is so constant and ubiquitious that adding the honorific is the most efficient way to keep track, but I appreciate that Nozomi has two subtitle tracks on Maria-sama ga Miteru, one with and one without, and don't mind at all having to switch to the honorifics subs on the DVD's.

Doing that in print is, of course, impossible without print on demand, and unlikely with print on demand, but given original art as a baselayer and translation as an overlay layer, would be quite possible with emanga.

Say that the emanga is a pdf ~ pdf can have references to external images, so two different pdf's pointing to the same external original art but distinct external overlays would handle it.

The last, truly new word: Bill Flanagan apologized to me on Twitter. I've gratefully accepted it, and will now drop the subject. Respect to him for being a gentleman even when I wasn't.

William,

I don't post here much, but in light of all the vitriol in this thread I popped in to offer a word of thanks. Thank you for doing video girl the way you did, it was the right way to handle it, it still is the right way to handle it, it will always be the right way to handle it. It saddens me to hear that a professional such as yourself had his resolve on this kind of thing weakened due to the outcry of a few vocal fans who don't know any better.

I really enjoyed listening to your interview. Thank you.
