NegaPosi is the surprise for me this season since I'm not a fishing person(but i did watch the last fishing seasonal that i remember, Days at breakwater or something like that). Based on i think Garnt's recommendation the show is very sincere and with a cast of interesting characters and just good voice acting. Really enjoyed the show.

Dan da dan of course was fantastic, really lives up and elevated the source material with the moving medium. Hope it continues into future seasons.

Orb continues to delight with some of the most suspenseful episodes of anime I've seen in a long time, but since there's always the (extremely slim) possibility that it falls off in its latter half I'll give it to NegaPosi Angler for now. I don't know if I've seen a more confident mission statement than starting a show with the main character comically failing to hang himself. And in all its somber and funny moments the show never let up on being a fantastically executed exploration of finding tranquility and hope in the most nihilistic of situations. Nut is 2 for 2 now on wonderful original anime and I look forward to what they got cooking next.

It's a wonderful surprise seeing that Acro Trip was mentioned in this article. It was the show I looked forward to the most every week because it made me laugh every single episode. Chrome and Chizuko are lovable dorks and I want more of them. Well, pretty much every character in this show is a lovable dork to some degree.

I'm also happy to see that Wonderful Precure got a mention. I'm relatively new to the franchise, but Wonderful is such a delight to watch and that's because of the cast and overall writing.

I completely skipped Dandadan because the premise is so uninteresting to me and I found the first chapter of the manga unimpressive, so it's shocking to me that it topped so many people's lists this season.

My personal top would be Ranma 1/2. While the first season ended on an awkward note (perhaps a side effect of adapting the manga so faithfully), it was still everything I enjoyed about the early volumes with some great animation. Since a second season's been announced, I wonder if the plan is to to adapt the whole manga or eventually just do a selection of storylines like David Production did with Urusei Yatsura.

I think I've finally been motivated by this article to check out Dandadan. I've been resistant for some reason -- being turned off by the premise and the design of one of the main characters -- but I realize now I should stop being close-minded and give it a try. Does that guy with the stupid mouth/mask ever get easier to look at?

On a personal level, the highlight of this season has been the return of two classic properties: Dragon Ball and Bleach. DB Daima is a lot of fun and gorgeous to look at, but nothing has given me more sentimental satisfaction than the triumphant return of Bleach as it gets the chance it deserves to close out the story. The issues with world-building in Bleach haven't gone anywhere, nor has the flat-out silliness and outlandishness of various characters and abilities, but it always saddened me that the manga declined to the point that Kubo didn't get to do everything he intended to, and we anime viewers never got to see the story conclude. Seeing Bleach come back as a high-quality production, apparently with tweaks to the original story made in consultation with Kubo, has filled me with joy. Each episode is packed with story and beautiful animation.

This was kind of a weak season for me. My winner would be Magilumiere by default, which was entertaining enough but not amazing. The Stories of Girls Who Couldn't Be Magicians had a lot going for it but ended up in the category of "not as good as it could have been." Gun Gale Online II felt like a sequel that existed for the sake of it and not because there was more story to tell.

Yes, I tried Dan da Dan, but it didn't do it for me. The first episode was a big turn-off, and the second just didn't manage to grab me in any notable way. I didn't watch any more. My brother finished it but didn't think much of it, and he and I have pretty similar tastes.

I also watched about half of Acro Trip, which was a shame, because it was probably the one I was enjoying the most in the early episodes, but I was snoozing by the middle of it.

FWIW I don't think there's really anything special about the premise of DDD -- it's not really breaking new narrative ground in any major way (unless it being shounen but with a female lead that more often than not eclipses its male lead counts, I guess)? It just executes on narrative and artistic fundamentals extremely well.

I don't personally mind the mouth/mask look you're referring to, but, if it helps at all, that character does not look like that most of the time.

Okay, good to know Smile And yeah, Dandadan may not be breaking new ground, but in my experience that's true of almost all shounen anime and yet I still enjoy them if they're well done. I'm also a big fan of quality animation, and I get the impression that DDD is The Designated Show this season -- the one which attracted the most top animators. Like OPM S1, or the Kaido vs. Luffy fight.

I'd say there's two things Dandadan does exceptionally well, and that are core to its identity. One is an exceptionally well-balanced and well-executed central romance, which includes an unusually blunt and funny treatment of sexuality. The other is its Sadako-vs.-Kayako-vs.-everything-and-the-kitchen-sink setting, where every bit of folklore old and new is fair game for some new insane spectacle.

No media has a 100% hit ratio, of course, and I've had a very bad time with anime that were even more intensely acclaimed. If there's a reason someone doesn't enjoy it, I'm willing to say it's probably a good one.

I'm more inclined to say Negative Positive Angler was the all-around best anime I watched this season, but as the sort of person who geeks out over good voice acting, Acro Trip was the most fun I had this season. Like they just scooped up three of the most distinctive VAs of the past decade (Miku Ito, Inori Minase, Nobunaga Shimazaki) and directed each one to try stealing every scene. Those three deserve an award for their work on that show.

Of the ones I've watched a bunch of (I have a bad habit of putting shows off for a while) some I've enjoyed are Spirit Chronicles 2, DanMachi 5 and Oshi No Ko 2.

For SC2 while I do feel it hasn't solved the pacing issues S1 had (probably in part due to both only having 12 episodes to work with) I found it to be better than S1, especially Rio's confrontation with his mom's killer, although I did find it odd that in the English dub at least the pronunciation for Miharu changed (Mi-haru in S1, Mi-ha-ru in S2 if that makes sense). I also found it odd how despite a returning voice cast some characters sounded different (Rio most notably), with them even rerecording S1 scenes with the new voices, though that could just be chalked up to their voices changing in the years between seasons, which does happen sometimes.

As for DM5 while I did accidentally spoil myself on the Sir plot point while looking up VAs on Wikipedia the rest I've not been spoiled on thankfully and so am really enjoying how the story is playing out so far. Not sure how the conflict will be resolved but we'll see how it goes.

ONK2 has been really entertaining as well, what with the play and the different character interactions and arcs they go through, Aqua, Melt and Kana especially. Granted I haven't seen the last 2 episodes yet but I doubt they'll be bad.

I really do not want to poo poo peoples' opinions on different anime, believe me I am not that kind of guy and think people should like what they like, I just do not understand peoples' love of Blue Box. I'm not trying to be passive aggressive, I sincerely tried so hard to get into this anime and understand what people see in it.

As a fan of Blue Box, having read it weekly for a few years now, I am also baffled at its widespread sometimes glowing positive reception lmao. It’s cool, obviously i like it if Im still following and have positive feelings about it but it’s nothing groundbreaking, nothing exciting, nothing notable and Im genuinely surprised it’s lasted this long in WSJ let alone has amassed such a large fanbase. Despite being a fan I never even considered picking up the anime entirely cause it’s not a story that IMO needs to be consumed more than once because really what is there even to revisit just because there's color, motion and sound.

I personally picked it up cause taiki was cute, and he is cute but he's not my favorite character (shoutout Haryu and Matsuoka) and he also does not at all seem to be what the majority of the audience is invested in (for Jump Festa they had Chinatsu as the character representative for the series in promotional imagery). It'll be intriguing to see what the long term reaction to the series will be because the anime is still very early stages and I think its one of those stories that gradually people will fall off of once they realize the overall lack of impactful developments or get impatient at the overall slug pace - and I say that as someone who has teared up a few times at the story (granted I honestly cry at everything).

I think Ayame's introduction will be an interesting litmus test for the english speaking audience's long term feelings, she's not divisive by any means but I can see her being widely hated just because of how she is and how I've seen fans react to characters like her in other stories. Additionally without spoiling, the descriptions of proximity to realism and groundedness and the like I can see not holding up as the series goes on due to several creative choices, but I'm intrigued about how the actual long term reaction will be overall regardless.
