The most out-of-place opening theme for an anime is "Tell Me Why" (Berserk). The song's completely out of tune and it reeks of Engrish. They should've used the instrumental theme "Forces" instead.

It gotta reek Engrish for us to be able to tell that it's J-Rock. That's what make J-Rock so special Very Happy

Still, i think that theme is alot more suitable than let's say Fruit basket's OP on Berserk. If anybody ever do that, i'll puncture my ear-drum

Steel Angel Kurumi's opening song, "A Miracle That Starts With a Kiss", was really too much fluff and pop in the first season, but when Season 2 started, "A Miracle That Starts With a Kiss, Mark II" turned the fluffy song into a nice techno-tune that became very catchy (you could even dance to it).

Also, Project A-Ko's '80s fluff gets annoying after a while ("Dance Away" really wants to make me go away Razz ).

(That was the best I could come up with that was different from what was already said. There are just too many that have such great opening tunes, like "Pure Snow" (Legend of Himiko) and "Duvet" (Serial Experiments Lain), that the bad ones are few and far between, really.)

I have actually bought animes just by seeing the opening theme and not even knowing what the show is about. Some that I have bought like this are Heat Guy J and Gungrave. Both of those shows are awesome (at least Gungrave is so far since they have only released up to DVD 4).

I saw Last Exile eps 9-12 in early December on Tech TV before I bought it. After the little preview for ep 9, which tells you nothing if you're start watching at this ep, you see the absolutely awesome opening theme. Right there I wanted to go online and buy the series. I decided to wait since in a week the entire series would be out in a collection. And that series is one of the best IMHO.

LOL!

Actually, my least favorite theme song has to be the original "Melissa" opening to Fullmetal Alchemist. I know alot of fans are annoyed that Adult Swim decided to use the "Ready Steady Go" opening, but in my opinion it is MUCH better and seems to fit the show better. The only thing I dislike about the first FMA DVD is having to either listen to or fast forward through the "Melissa" op.

that song "soramimi cake" from azumanga daioh, although i guess it would fit the show, that song is a little...weird. but i can't talk, i listen to "sobakasu"...

soramimi cake = lsd trip

And the intro for Paranoia Agent worked for me. With all those people laughing repetitively, how can it not be creepy and disturbing?

Beck was somewhat refreshing. It's nice to hear a good rocking intro that fits well into an anime about rock.

The GetBackers theme at first I hated so much and it sounded v grating to my ears. Then I started to listen more when I watched the show, and I started liking it. It's a little weird, but it's actually really good!

I agree...It's kinda annoying...v poppy, not v FMA...too bad, because they have other songs that are better, and less poppy. The best FMA op, imho, is Rewrite by Asian Kung Fu Generation, and Kesenai Tsumi by Nana Kitade is the best ed. After hearing them, I went to download more of their songs!
