Remind me of my grandma in a weird way. A couple of years ago, I published a collection of yaoi fanfictions to be sold at a convention. Since I was still living with my parents back then, they knew that I was publishing something to be sold in some cartoon fair although they didn't know the exact detail of what I would be selling. My mother told my grandma, and my grandma WANTED one of the books as a keepsake........ Since I couldn't say no, I had to sell her one.... I thought that she wouldn't understand and give up reading, but she managed to finish it and asked me what is the whole 'yaoi' thing is about.

Believe me, it wasn't one of the more comfortable conversations to have with your grandmother. She also asked for a sample of other yaoi novels that I own in order to understand what it is all about (and I gave her some of Harry Potter yaoi novels that I had). It was really weird. She didn't tell on my parents, or turn into an anime fan. Seems like she was just curious. Then again, she might be trying to analyze my mental state because she was an university professor specializing in psychology... This isn't really relate to this week's stripe (which is great as usual), but it really reminds me of this event.

???
Seems like all anime girls look like women... stacked and with assets to spare, as teens. flip side of the coin?
Seems like many teen anime boys look like girls. NOT dressed like them literally, but effeminate... Which can be irritating or funny. Favorite funny part of old El Hazard is Hero-as-princess... being chased by the lesbian servant girl. Laughing If you think about it, MANY protagonists are shown as wimpy, at least initially.

Sometimes girls look like girls. Like most of the AzuDai cast, or the ones from Minami-ke who aren't in high school Haruka. And so on.

I love how awkward this situation is; it kinda reminds me of the the time, when I was explaining the storyline of a show that I was watching to my Grandma. But after I told her it was an anime and not a live action movie, she kinda looked at me sideways and said, "You mean one of those Japanese kiddy cartoons that little [insert younger relative] watches?" Laughing

One time (many years ago) I showed my grandma some manga (Inuyasha if I recall) and her comments were basically, "Why does that man look like a woman?" (referring to Sesshomaru), "Wow, it's so violent" (referring to Sesshomaru massacring an army of mooks in a two-page spread consisting primarily of blood and severed body parts) and "Why are his eyes so big? Japanese people don't have big eyes." (My grandma is not always the most... politically correct woman around.) Needless to say, in future I decided to refrain from showing manga to any friends or family members over the age of 30.

All that said, I think I may be missing the joke in the last two panels there.

shyeah, I should'na used the term All... but wouldn't you be pointing out exceptions? How many times where the teen girl isn't buxom do we see that fact turned to funny? I'm most amused at the way Kannagi did that... but seldom do girls look androgynous to the point where you can't tell [even if it's just the skirt].

That made me LOL. Just like my grandma. I do wonder what she would've done if he just agreed.

Those two should just be grateful that Grandma Rosa has a sense of humor and opts to just stir 'em up about 'them weird cartoons', as opposed to the lecture about the evils of the Japanese animated kiddie porn some folks use instead.

I like Grandma Rosa... methinks she's going to be the preverbial monkey wrench in our trio's well-balanced otakudom for a few weeks. Laughing

Grandma: Where are you going this weekend?
Me: ...Anime...Expo... >_>;;
Grandma: What's that? That's not those stupid cartoons, right?
Me: ...Well... It's... not really... It's more like... culture... Sort of... *wanttogetoffphoneNOW*

Needless to say, me and Grandma don't have the "yaoi discussion".

That's much like my grandmother who decided to go to an anime convention with me a couple years ago...

She sat in the hotel room the entire weekend complaining that all there was to do was watch cartoons... Rolling Eyes (and she thinks -everything- is Sailor Moon or Pokemon)

At least trying to talk her into eating sushi was halfways fun...

I don't think I've mentioned the fact that I watch anime to my grandmother. The conversation just never came up. It's doubtful she'd be interested, though.

Grandma Rosa is okay in my book. She seems like a fun lady!

I'm reminded of Nina's thanksgiving strip. "The men look as if they are women and I am liking it!"

Funny strip. I look foward to seeing Paula's little brother with a mix of excitement and dread.
