NOMINATING:
Zed vs. Noa Kiba pic
Type of Conflict: Ideological, enemies
What it's All About: Zed (the delinquent) and Noa (the model student) are two friends living in the rundown city of Calm. Everything changes though when they are transported to a magical world in the middle of war. Zed ends up in the country of Templar where he is given freedom and a chance to improve his newly discovered abilities as a Shard Caster. Noa ends up in Neotopia, a militaristic country that practices Absolute Law, where anyone who breaks the law is put to death, no matter the offense. Noa, through being traumatized and brainwashed, becomes Neotopia's 'savior' and tries to kill Zed when they finally met again because Zed does not agree with Absolute Law.
Why they Should Win: Both Zed and Noa are fighting for the same thing. They both want peace, but they each can't condone the other's actions. Their rivalries is an example of how one cruel twist of fate can break a friendship and turn each against the other.

Yasuna Kamiizumi vs. Tomari Kurusu Kasimasi- Girl meets girl pic*
Type of Conflict: Love rivals
What it's All About: Hazumu Osaragi is hit by a spaceship and killed. The aliens are able to revive him, but they accidentally turn him into a girl. This has the opposite affect from what you'd expect, as Yasuna, a girl he confessed to but got rejected by, reciprocates her feelings now that Hazumu is a girl. With all the changes going on Hazumu doesn't respond immediately, which makes Tomari, Hazumu's childhood friend, realize she's in love with Hazumu. This starts the rivalry for Hazumu's love.
Why they Should Win: It's extremely difficult to be friends with someone when you are rivals in love, and this situation shows how Yasuna's and Tomari's friendship struggles to maintain itself while they are competing for Hazumu's love.

*Tomari is on the left and Yasuna on the right

Seconding Catians vs. Dogisians, although I think you could also argue an interesting case for Aoi and Manami, who essentially compete with each other to convince the other that the other is more worthy than she is to pursue Kio.

Nominating:

Ranka Lee vs. Sheryl Nome
, Macross Frontier pic
Type of Conflict: Romantic and Professional Rivals
What It's About: The two do not start as adversaries; in fact, Sheryl, the reigning Galactic Fairy (i.e. the setting's top singer), actively encourages Ranka as the latter pursues her own career. Sheryl's star falls as Ranka's rises, however, which puts them in professional conflict, and the growing feels that each has for main hero Alto puts them in a romantic conflict, too. At one point late in the series, when Ranka has fallen under the spell of the enemy, they even duel with their songs for influence over the enemy Vajra (one uniting them, the other hindering them) in a battle with the survival of Macross Frontier at stake.
Why They Should Win: Ranka and Sheryl's relationship is one of the more complex rivalries, as they are simultaneously both friends and opponents. Though they rarely openly acknowledge it, the feelings displayed by the two girls make it clear that they are both willing to compete with the other for what they want.

Nominating
Kenji Harima vs. Haruki Hanai, School Rumble pic
Type of Conflict: (Unnecessarily) Romantic Rivals, Teenage Delinquent vs Upstanding Student
What It's All About: So, Harima has a crush on Tenma Tsukamoto, and Hanai has a crush on Yakuma Tsukamoto, and since pretty much everyone in School Rumble is a complete moron when it comes to relationships, Harima and Hanai frequently battle due to one talking about Tsukamoto and other incorrectly assuming he's talking about the other sister.
Why They Should Win: The thing that makes School Rumble great is the idiotic over-reactions to mostly mundane issues that could be easily resolved with just a few sentences. The eternal conflict between these two misguided, love struck boys is a great example. Hanai, being a painfully forthright individual, already has issues with Harima's rebelious attitude, and Harima in return thinks Hanai has a massive bug up his butt. Piled on top of this, the regular misunderstandings in the love tesseract that is School Rumble's closest thing to a larger plot lead to off-the-wall melees between the two.

NOMINATING:
Kenichi Shirahama vs. Ragnarok Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple pic*
Key Members of Ragnarok: Eight Deadly Fists: Odin, Berserker, Freya, Loki, Siegfried, Hermit, Thor, and Valkyrie. Others: Koga Taichi, Ikki Takeda, and Kozo Ukita.
Type of Conflict: enemies
What it's All About: Kenichi is a wimp but wants to get stronger, so he starts training at a mysterious dojo his classmate Miu lives at. When he beats the karate captain at his school (mostly by luck), he draws the attention of a gang called Ragnarok, and when it comes to joining them, they don't take no for an answer. So when Kenichi refuses and defeats their messenger, they send stronger and stronger opponents after him to either convince him to join him, or make sure he can't ever oppose them.
Why they Should Win: This is another of one of the most entertaining rivalries out there, and it's got some seriously awesome fights. As their rivalry escalates, both sides are driven to improve their fighting techniques and question what they are fighting for.

*I couldn't find a pic with more than 2 characters together, so here's Kenichi and the 1st fist Odin

Voting/Seconding:
Makoto Mizuhara vs Katsuhiko Jinnai
- El Hazard
Yasuna Kamiizumi vs. Tomari Kurusu - Kashimashi

Btw, being a very back-seat participant in this tournament so only seconding and not making any effort to nominate. But I'm quite surprised no pairs from the Read or Die franchise have been nominated yet.

No problem with that, in fact if anyone has any rivals in mind that haven't been nominated yet and you don't have the time to do the nomination, just say the pair and I'll do my best to write it up. There's only a few not-so-strong rivalries I can think of at the moment that haven't been nominated yet, so it looks like this stage is winding down.

If I did not have an exam today and tomorrow, I would write one up for Eva pilots vs Angels from Neon Genesis Evangelion or something along this line. But yeah, the stress is eating me atm, so might not manage to do it...

I've been trying to think of somemore rivalries that were less hero vs Big Bad but sadly have been failing. That said, I think this tournament is missing some Sailor Moon action. The best I think would be the Scouts vs Queen Beryl, because of the backstory and stuff. Though you might be able to have the Inners vs Outers, or at least Haruka & Michiru, since they end up at odds a fair amount of the time.

Suggestions for those better informed or more passionate...

Edward Elric (or more appropriate party... State Alchemists?) vs Scar
Speed Racer vs. Racer X (or is Rex more supportive? IDK)
Strike Witches vs. Neuroi
Dark vs. Krad (D.N.Angel) (personally I might vote against them because the show stunk IMHO- but it qualifies)

A-Ko vs. B-Ko
Nagi/Kannagi vs. Zange/Hakua
Kenji Koiso and the Jinnouchi clan vs. Love Machine (actually I might do this one eventually if no one else does)

[striking out those that now have write-ups]

Aria the Scarlett Ammo vs Logic (oops, sorry, current season Wink )

and one NOMINATION for a pair that probably won't get a single vote, but somehow I love these two:

Photon Earth vs. "Papacha" Papacharino Nanadan - Photon: The Idiot Adventures - pic
Type of Conflict: Papacha wants Keyne Aqua, Photon protects her.
What It's About: Papacha is a power hungry, perverted, sleazeball with designs on taking over the galaxy from the emperor and to do this this he needs the knowledge of Keyne Aqua and the secrets of the ""Aho" energy that she possesses. Photon actually naturally possess tremendous quantities of this energy which makes him super-naturally strong and immune to other forms of the energy. He is, however, rather dim. When he accidentally claims the sleeping Keyne Aqua as his wife (by mischievously writing the same word on her head as written on his own (idiot) he becomes her protector. Papacha uses ever more powerful weapons of destruction against Photon but fails repeatedly.
Why They Should Win: The ultimate pairing of bumbling villain and dim-witted hero, yet Papacha does have real abilities and Photon is a very loyal and determined hero and the show does end with a very tense showdown between the two.

Wow, this is a lot of responses! *cracks knuckles* Time to get to work!
NOMINATING:
Sailor Scouts vs. Queen Beryl Sailor Moon franchise pic of Queen Beryl
Key Members of the Sailor Scouts: Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury, Rei Hino/Sailor Mars, Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter, Minako Aino/Sailor Venus, Sailor Chibi Moon, Setsuna Meioh/Sailor Pluto, Michiru Kaioh/Sailor Neptune, Haruka Tenoh/Sailor Uranus, Hotaru Tomoe/Sailor Saturn
Type of conflict: enemies
What it's All About: Long ago there existed a peaceful kingdom on the moon, but when the prince of Earth and the princess of the Moon fell in love, Beryl was jealous and so started a war that wiped out both civilizations. The prince, princess, and protector scouts were all reincarnated on earth in the 20th century, and must gather together to protect their world before Beryl releases the seal on the evil Queen Metalia.
Why they Should Win: They say hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, and this certainly proves it. Queen Beryl's wrath at Prince Endymion for leaving her love unrequited is so strong it continues after she is reincarnated.

Eva Pilots vs. Angels Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise pic
Key Eva Pilots: Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayaname, Asuka Langley Soryu, Toji Suzuhara, and Kaworu Nagisa
Type of Conflict: survival
What it's All About: Angels are creatures that, although they look like giant giant monsters, have over 99% the same genetic structure. Normal weapons have nearly no effect on the angels, even if you drop a bomb on them. The Evas, giant mechs piloted by teenagers, are the only things that can defeat them, so it is up to the young eva pilots to protect the city of Tokyo-3.
Why they Should Win: This is probably the least straight-forward rivalry in anime. Their battles are epic, but it's the struggles going on inside their heads that are the real show.

Guts vs. Griffith Berserk pic
Type of Conflict: ideological
What it's All About: Guts challenges Griffith and loses the battle, and so from then on works under Griffith, the leader of a mercenary unit. It is Griffith's dream to one day be king, and his ruthless methods don't sit well with Guts. Their conflict doesn't come into full force though until Guts and Griffith battle for a second time.
Why they Should Win: Griffith is the smooth-talking, strategic-thinking handsome swordsman that could sell ice to the eskimos. Guts is a giant of a man with good intentions, but he lets himself too easily be controlled. Even when working together, their relationship is turbulent and unsteady.

So its been years since I've seen any Sailor Moon or Eva, so if Im missing something or there's something you want to add feel free to say so. Berserk too.

Nominating
Yuri Nakamura vs. “Tenshi”/Kanade Tachibana, Angel Beats pic (thanks to Spastic Minnow for the picture)
Type of Conflict: Ideological Enemies
What It's All About: Finding herself in an afterlife resembling a mostly typical high school, Yuri rebels against god and the unfairness and suffering in life, creating an armed revolution of followers. Her tangible goal is to defeat the student council president, whom she identifies as one of god's angels. Kanade attempts to suppress Yuri's efforts and maintain a normal, peaceful environment so that the student residents of the afterlife eventually disappear and move on.
Why They Should Win: This battle transcends simple personal grudges. Yuri's desire to challenge god expresses a clear desire for free will and control over one's destiny, while Kanade displays an unflinching devotion to established order and the sense security that comes with familiarity. The description so far though perhaps doesn't adequately represent the ferocity of the struggle. Although taking place in the afterlife, the characters can die, although they revive not too long later. Yuri and her followers standard arms range from katana and battle axes to pistols and sub-machine guns, the fire from which Kanade wades into with Terminator-esque resolve.

Nagi vs. Zange, Kannagi pic
Type of Conflict: Competing Dieties, Romantic Rivals (somewhat)
What It's All About: Nagi is the physical manifestation of a goddess created when Jin Mikuriya carves a statue from a piece of a sacred tree. Zange is her sister who has made an arrangement with a local girl to possess and share her body. As goddesses, the two girls require the attention of people to maintain their supernatural powers, and as such they compete for the adoration of the people.
Why They Should Win: Although the series never quite expands on the idea, it raises the idea that pop idols are worshiped and adored almost religiously be some. There is also the issue of whether it is better to adapt to be most suited to the modern world or maintain a link to the past.

Mugen vs. Jin, Samurai Champloo pic
Type of Conflict: Rival Ronin
What It's All About: Two aimlessly wandering samurai meet and battle. Mugen, in particular, is looking for a strong opponent, but once engaged Jin shows equal resolve in fighting to the death. The fight is interrupted when the two are arrested for earlier crimes, and the death match is indefinitely delayed when a girl named Fuu rescues them and has them repay her by escorting her on a journey.
Why They Should Win: Mugen and Jin are wildly different in every possible way. Attitude, appearance, fighting style, mannerisms; all contrast violently, and throughout the journey remains the understanding that when Fuu finds her objective, they will settle their score.

Sanada Yukimura vs. Date Masamune, Sengoku Basara pic
Type of Conflict: Rival Generals
What It's All About: Date Masamune is the leader of the Date clan, and Sanada Yukimura is a vassal of Takeda Shingen. When they meet in battle, they nearly immediately recognize the skill and honor in each other and regard the other as a worthy adversary. Although they do join forces on a few occasions to battle greater enemies, they both recognize they cannot ultimately remain equal and un-unified.
Why They Should Win: Few other entrants in this tournament have anywhere near the same level of raw passion as these two; as is evidenced by their abilities to manifest lightning and fire when they clash in battle. Despite knowing that neither would ever be willing to submit to the rule of the other, they have great respect between them, and constantly strive to become better as leaders and fighters, motivated by the knowledge that they will face one another again.

Amu Hinamori vs. Utau Hoshina, Shugo Chara pic
Type of Conflict: Rival Magical Girls, Initially Romantic Rivals (Kind of)
What It's All About: As part of the Guardian Council, Amu is tasked with protecting the Heart Eggs (essentially dreams for the future) of children, but Utau, working for the Easter Corporation, uses her abilities to darken the Heart Eggs of children as a means of searching out the legendary Embryo. Their conflicting goals cause obvious clashes, and at one point, Utau inadvertently steals one of Amu's Shugo Chara (magic spirits that give the girls powers) and uses it as her own. Furthermore, Utau is intensely jealous of the flirting that occurs between Ikuto and Amu.
Why They Should Win: This is a solid example of a magical girl vs dark magical girl conflict, where the villainess' motivation is not malevolent in origin, but from a lack of friendship and a misguided devotion to the object of her love. Utau's theft of Amu's Shugo Chara leads to significant development for both characters, and eventually comes full circle before Utau switches from an enemy to a reluctant friend.

Ikuto Tsukiyomi vs. Tadase Hotori, Shugo Chara pic
Type of Conflict: Former Friends Turned Enemies, Romantic Rivals
What It's All About: As young children, the two had been good friends, but that ended Ikuto left suddenly in an incident coinciding with the death of Tadase's beloved pet dog. Ikuto began working for the Easter Corporation, aiding them in their search for the legendary Embryo, while Tadase, as a member of the Guardian Council, fights against Easter's harmful methods. In addition, the two are the primary contenders for the romantic affections of the series protagonist, Amu.
Why They Should Win: This conflict is tinged with regret on Ikuto's part and confusion on Tadase's. While an explanation from Ikuto could fairly easily lead to forgiveness and reconciliation, emotional isolation and complications prevent him from doing so. Beyond this, there are the romantic entanglements between the boys and Amu which result in some painful betrayal of trust (all appropriately chaste for a cast of teens and tweens).

The following is not a nomination or a vote in support of, because this pair has already been nominated, and I have already voted to support them, but I thought the write-up could use to be expanded, so I offer this as an alternative to the current one for Key to use if he so chooses (if they make the cut).

Togame vs. Princess Hitei, Katanagatari pic
Type of Conflict: Political Opponents, Fated Enemies
What It's All About: Togame is the daughter of the executed leader of a failed rebellion, and seeks the powerful and cursed 12 deviant blades for the emperor (less as a path to revenge and more as a reason to give purpose to her survival). Princess Hitei's origins and purpose are more mysterious (and explaining them would spoil the final act), but she is also competing with Togame to collect the deviant blades.
Why They Should Win: While Togame and Hitei have limited direct contact, they regularly muse on each others' actions and strive to outwit, out-strategize, and out-maneuver their rival in the search for the deviant blades. When the two do meet, there is obvious hostility between them, but also hints of a sense of companionship, as they share the quality of being a prominent ambitious female in a male-dominated society. In the final episode, Shichika, Togame's bodyguard, even manages to get Hitei to admit they were kind of friends.
