We were laughing about this the other day in my illustration class after checking out Jhonen's blog for the day. He may not take legal action, but that doesn't mean Viacom/Nickelodeon won't think about it when they find out. Who technically owns Invader Zim is annoying.

Unless we see Chuck riding a pig, I'm not convinced.

I don't think there's enough here for a lawsuit, littlegreen. The concept of a green dog shouldn't have a license on it, but knowing Nick (with that money to blow) they probably have a license on it.

On a personal note, I always found Invader Zim to be disgusting. From the character designs to the way people's tongues would stick out, but I FREAKING LOVED IT for that. It reminded me of how Cow and Chicken would bounce on their butts and stuff.

I am sensing a possible legal headache somewhere, because the characters do look similar and that could easily violate copyright laws.

I hadn't seen any of Invader Zim's art prior to this, but now that I have I can say that Gainax's creation certainly doesn't stray into copycat territory in my opinion (both of those puns brought to you with conviction, by the way). Definitely an homage going on, though.

Having said that... which one is which?

Rolling Eyes When haven't you sensed doom and gloom down the road for someone/thing?

Even if this was meant to be a parody of Gir, there's hardly enough similarities to support a lawsuit. Nothing to see here other than the creator of Gir more or less acknowledging they look similar and basically wishing them well.

I suppose it's only fair after Jhonen threw a brief Evangelion reference into an Invader Zim episode. He doesn't seem too broken up about it, anyway.

I'm pretty sure it could fall under Fair Use as a parody.

I said possible, never said it actually may indeed happen. Yes, it's a parody, but copyright violations are more common than you may think. Happened with Toriko and several other series as of recent.

LOL I've never met a person who hasn't seen Invader Zim.

The one on the right is GIR from Invader Zim and the one on the left is from Panty & Stocking (or whatever that anime is called). So the one on the right is the "original" (if you wanna call it that though the other isn't really a copy).

On a side note: These have soap and peanuts in 'em!

Dudes, this is Nickelodeon we're talking about here. Creating a cartoon character that resemble something popular, especially something as iconic as Gir (don't believe me? Walk into a Hot Topic 10 years after Invader Zim is off the air, and see what people are still buying) is risky. If Gainax makes merchandising off this little green dog, and he continued with the... the Gir like-ness (drooling, dancing around, etc) I think Nickelodeon, what with their tons of money for lawyers, has a very good case. Besides, it'll all come down to a judge and whether or not he sees similarities. This is how all copyright infringement art cases end up; a judge's opinion. Gainax just better not ever have it 1) fly on a pig 2) get obsessed with mad monkeys/moose/tacos/Slurpee or 3) show it to be a robot at some point, or they'll be in big trouble.

I'm glad that Jhonen finds this "Gir and the copy" thing as a laugh. Everyone compared this to Invader Zim when it first aired, so this article was bound to come sooner or later. Plus, I honestly though P&S was MADE by Vasquez. Oh well, no harm done, right?

Do you honestly think that Nick would be that much of an asshole about it? There are similarities, yes, but even Jhonen ****ing Vasquez is being a good sport about them copying GIR. Unless Nick wants to admit that they're losing money because of the crap they put on their network, then I don't see a lawsuit coming unless it's straight out of Vasquez's hands.

Nice, thanks. My guess was that GIR was the one on the right. It only occurs to me now though that Google was sitting there in front of me the whole time. Anyway yeah, not enough to talk about copies and originals (though if they start sharing other traits like littlegreen mentioned, maybe?).
