And so it begins. I knew something would happen with a series such as this, but I couldn't figure out what would actually happen.

From the look of things, it just seems that he has concerns some may use this as an excuse to impose greater legislation on adult gaming. He may be making a mountain out of a molehill here, but I don't see a problem with him voicing his concerns.

Although it would be ironic if his thoughts made legislators sit up and take notice of this show.

Wait, what? Because a minor in a fictional series is able to access adult games, this shows that adult game makers don't practice proper regulation in reality?

Or at least that's what Maeda thinks supporters of government regulation will say.

Actually, given the arguments some people in the US have made for video game regulation in general, I can see someone doing that, but it's a completely stupid argument.

Like there hasn't already been a ton of media showing minors exposing themselves to pornography =/

Although, what does he mean by "Oreimo is supported by many makers of adult erotic games" (articles wording)? I mean, if porn game makers are publicly saying "Ahaha, this is awesome that this anime is showing a minor playing porn games.", it could make it seem like they are supporting minors playing their games.

These virtual kids are getting out of hand with their antics.

I foresee Japanese legislation introducing laws protecting its citizens from them rather them from the citizens.

Pedobear will co-sponsor.

I think his concern would be like if the smoking/tobacco industry made a cartoon wherein a 13 (or however old the girl is) year old is smoking. That kind of incident would be a huge deal in the US.

But I mean, doesn't this series air in the middle of the night, and is aimed at adult males anyways? So it'd be like if some adult targeted drama had some kids smoking or something, which probably wouldn't be as big of deal.

anyways, it's just some dude making comments on twitter :\

As I watched the first episode (having had no idea that ANN would be streaming this) I was wondering about the age restriction too, so I'm interested to see where this goes.

I'm not sure if the problem here is minors engaging in age-restricted activities as much as it is the nature of the activities. I've seen an awful lot of movies with teenagers smoking, drinking, or doing other illegal things. It could be more that the playing of adult games has such a social stigma, but then again I have no idea about how strict these types of age restrictions are in Japan.

I think showing a minor playing an adult-only game simply reflects that they often manage to get access to adult things. It's not different from showing Naruto reading a porn mag as it does in the early episodes.

It's not that these things aren't being regulated: it's that sometimes they will either go where they're not supposed to (like in the adult-only section of a store when a clerk isn't watching) or find some way of obtaining it like faking an identity, or using an adult's credit card.

I think the point he's making is that OreImo is basically a "shoot yourself in the foot" series for the adult game industry. Pointing out that self regulation might not be as effective as one hope and that the series might not show the percieved negatives of the behavior well enough. But OreImo is problem an extreme case of an underage user but who knows how politicians will spin things.

But it's only been one freakin episode so its still to early for anything. But I get the concern.

The issue is how much this is funded/suported by eroge makers, it might make it look like they don't enforce/ care about their own rules. A 14 year old should not be able to use her own money to buy these, that's where the issue is.
The worry is that the Gov.t might start censoring them (rather than the indusry self-censor), which they realy don't want.

As mentioned above it's like a film with obvious funding from tobaco or alcohol, showing an underage main charcter smoking/ drinking (in a good light).

Mind you, having minors with porn in anime and manga is used an awful lot. Seemingly without objection, one of the grade schoolers in mitsudome is always reading porn, for example. Lucky Star has Konata and Patricia playing eroge underage in it.

That's not the point. He says the issue lies with eroge developers supporting this particular series.
Dunno what his intent of pointing this out was though.

But I have to wonder what exactly he means by developers "supporting" the anime. I wasn't aware any of them had any real connections to it.

I think you hit the nail on its head. The writer was surprised that many makers were giving such clear support for the show without making disclaimers, etc. that he's worried this is essentially a declaration from the game makers that their efforts at self regulation were all talk. The news here has nothing to do with the fact that there is a minor playing eroge in the show, but everything to do with how the author feels such straightforward approval from these game companies essentially amounts to their shooting themselves in the foot.

NOTE: I have not watched the show yet, so I have not had a chance to check the credits; I'm still waiting for the official streams to start.

I thought it was going to him complaining about the minors in the anime playing adult games. I'm surprised to say I agree with him. I can definitely see both some sensitive people and the Japanese government doing this.

So what begins? Since when does having a producer criticizing his work amount to that much? Nothing has even started yet. You're overthinking this a little.

I think we've gotten a little too obsessed with drama lately, especially with the political kind. Rolling Eyes

I think his main concern was that his particular depiction of a minor playing adult games in the anime may have the unintentional effect of giving audiences the impression that he supports government regulation, as well as strengthening public support for it, despite the fact that he clearly doesn't want it at all.

I mean, having portrayals that make the eroge industry look bad do go against the interests of the eroge developers that support this series, after all. I doubt he intended to do that.
