I've been trying to find volume 3 of Monster, it isn't in any stores in my city. I tried looking on Rightstuf, and imagine my surprise when I found that it wasn't listed there. I then went to Amazon.ca and noticed something (possibly frightful?). Volume three was not selling any new copies from Amazon. And the other volumes were on their last copy, and it did not indicate that Amazon was receiving anymore volumes.
I've tried going on Viz's website and it doesn't seem to indicate any problems, but if Amazon and Rightstuf can't stock all the volumes, this makes me worry a bit.
Could this mean Monster is going out of print? Or maybe Viz is planning to make an omnibus format of this series and letting the other volumes go OOP?
Any thoughts? I find this very strange. I thought the Monster manga was pretty popular.

EDIT: I went to the Viz store just now and they were listing their last copy of Volume 3 of Monster at $60...

Yes, it's going out of print. Some volumes have been hard to find for a while now. Viz has not announced a VizBig edition, but it might happen in the future.

The first couple of Inuyasha volumes are OOP too. But Inuyasha has a Vizbig.

Try actually asking your bookseller to order it. A lot of chains like Borders and B&N have massive backstock of books that are OOP. I have gotten several at cover price that are much more online, even years after they went OOP. If one bookstore chain doesn't have it, try another, they usually have different warehouses.

See if there's not a local comic book shop you couldn't ask to get it in for you either, I just got GTO 23 from one near me. It seems they have lots of other comic book shop friends and if something hasn't been OOP too long, they might be able to work out getting one for you (heck GTO 23 has been out of print way longer than Monster 3 has). You could also try going to stores that you know don't happen to move manga all that often, it's where I got my Saikano 7.

I've been able to order most of the manga from Rightstuf, with a few assorted volumes purchased in B&M stores. But I guess I'm shocked that the series is OOP, I thought it was pretty popular (and Urusawa is an amazing creator!).

It's rather sad that series is going out of print, because I would love to recommend it to my friends to buy.

What's really weird is that Viz is still promoting this series in some of their books even though its going out of print. I was glancing through a copy of House of Five Leaves and I saw an ad for this manga. Why would they still be promoting it even though they seem to be giving up on printing more copies of it. Makes no sense to me.

Yeah, volume 3 in particular is getting scarce. I looked everywhere for it and no one seems to have a copy. RACS is selling it for an outrageous price as are some sellers on the Amazon marketplace. I may have to bite the bullet, but I would rather Viz just reprint the damn thing. (Please?)

Yeah, I'm hoping they do an omnibus or a reprint or something. Weird how they're advertising a series they're letting go OOP.

Viz, please don't let Monster go out of print! It's a great series!

Hopefully they'll bring in the Deluxe editions out that our European friends are getting now:

I wouldn't recommend crossing your fingers though. While there's not necessarily connection, Viz STILL has not even announced intentions to release the second set of Monster DVDs. It's been at least a year since the first.

Man, it's topics like these that make me feel ironically smug because I started collecting them well before the series ended (hmm, maybe 8 or so volumes were out at the time I started collecting?).

But I'm pretty sure this is Viz's way of punishing people who don't buy stuff almost as soon as they come out, I guess that's one way to do business, the looming threat that some day, the series you want will be rare while the ones you don't want will have a million copies everywhere for cheap. So buy it! Buy it now!

I hear they have some big announcement coming next week though, let's hope it's actually the news that I want (ie, they're gonna maybe publish some long OOP stuff like Basara in Big edition), but I'm fairy sure it'll end up being something I don't care about.

Yeah, I hate that feeling (the BUY IT NOW one). I had been planning on collecting Monster later, but when I found out that certain volumes were going OOP, I rushed last month to find some of the OOP ones and buy them. I was able to find them at different stores for retail prices and I now currently own Vols 1-3, 5, 6, and 8. 4, 7 and 9 are still in print, which I'll buy in the next coming months, and then I'll slowly buy the rest (I'm assuming that later volumes won't go away so quickly - PLEASE).

Man, now I've got my hopes up, which I don't know is a good thing or a bad thing. I would really like a Basara big edition to be released - I currently have 10 or 11 of the 27 volumes, but I've come to accept that I'll probably never get volume 19 (I bought V20 for $50 at the beginning of the year... now I wish I had bought 19 as well for the same price at the time). Even if big volumes are released, I'll still continue collecting the smaller volumes, but I would double dip to make certain I had V19 covered.

And, if not Basara, then I'd at least like some sort of finished release for the Monster anime. I've been holding off on buying the first 15 episodes because I wanted at least some sort of confirmation that Viz was going to continue releasing the series.

Please, Viz, let it be good news in one of those areas. Please.
