Round 3 Group B is now closed.
Results can be found here. We have two ties from last time to clean up. Will any of those involved in the ties survive the round? I'll be surprised if any of them do, given the competition, but it certainly puts an extra element of entertainment into this Group's proceedings. Group B-25 Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise Last edited by Key on Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:18 pm; edited 1 time in total |

To completely mess with Key's mind, I'm going to vote early, this time.
Group B-25 Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Voting for Balalaika. She constantly projects such an eerie aura of competent murderousness that it makes me break a sweat, just watching her. It's fair to say that she, by her presence, lends a special aura of creepiness to Black Lagoon, and she certainly dominates whatever scene she is in. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise I have to be honest and say that I don't really care. It's hard to muster arguments in favour of a default vote, but if I have to, I would say that Kurz Weber strikes me as contributing more to FMP than Shikamaru does to Naruto, so that is how I'm voting. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke No question here, my vote goes to Winry Rockbell. She could have been such a cookie-cutter character, if the mangaka and the animators had been lazy. She could have been just another straight-off-the-conveyor-belt tsundere osananajimi, but she's not. She has real depth of character and a moving backstory. When she is on-stage, she makes you care about her, and her reactions to Ed and Al aren't the stuff of standard cardboard plot-mush. She's a real person, in so far as a fictional character can be that. And that makes her a memorable and significant character. Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise You all know how I'm going to vote here: Admiral Spoor just kicks the pants off her competitors in this round. None of them can match her lava-hot mixture of sexual magnetism, aloof humour, intellectual acumen and sheer kickass decisiveness. If only she'd had more face-time in the anime... - abunai |

Results.
A little bit of a surprise with A-27. The mini-game favored Kimura slightly, not the resounding victory for Lt. Yamamoto we saw. Renge, too, had been slightly favored to win, and she almost did. Nabuca vs. Genkai turned out almost exactly as expected, and pretty much everyone picked Hughes to win over Haruka (the one person who didn't had someone other than Haruka in that slot). Overall accuracy this round was 43%. Not the worst score for a third round block, but easily below average. Olliff (106) remains on top, but Key and Mow (102) gained slightly, now only 4 points back. Ggultra (93) also gained a little, but is still 13 points off first place. JesuOtaku (88) holds onto 5th, and generally there was little change in the rankings for the mini-game. By now, three people are out of the running for prizes (not necessarily the current bottom three).
Congratulations on being the first person to vote on all seven days of the week. |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon I’m sticking with Balalaika because she just has that extra something that works for me that Franz just doesn’t give me. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise Kurz has the attitude of a smart-ass frat boy but he’s damn good at his job. Be that fighting one on one with the enemy or taking them out from far away. He does what needs to be done. And he provides the humor that occasionally needed in battle situations…but he does it at the RIGHT time not just because he has the opportunity. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Winry just out-classes everyone. Sister, friend, loved one, damned good automail mechanic. Winry is able to provide friendship to pretty much everyone she meets…even those who are in the military, whom she doesn’t really like at first. Group B-28 Reika Mishima, RahXephon Poor Leo was seriously out-classed by the strong women of Spoor and Reika. But I’m going to have to give my vote to Reika because she moved the plot of RahXephon along more than Spoor moved the Stars storylines. Plus, Reika helped the main character a lot more than Spoor did. |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Voting for Balalaika who was a consistently strong and memorable character throught black lagoon. Her crafted air of casual superiority was awesome and she could switch from almost complete irreverance to brutal intensity in the slightest change of voice pitch. She is going to be hard to beat methinks. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise As much as I have come to dislike Naruto as a show I can't really see how Kurz can win this one being primarily comic relief. Shikimaru is a great strategic thinker and his fights where always interesting. He came up with clever ways to beat his opponent rather than reling on the usual shonen tropes of gritting your teeth and screaming really really loud or pulling out some kind of I.win supermove. Therefore Shikimaru gets my vote. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Voting for Winry Rockbell Pretty much everything I could possibly say about this character is summed up in Abunai's post above. Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise For me this match is between Reika and Letopanyu. If I where to judge based on how much impact the character has on the plot Reika would probably be the clear winner but I feel that would be giving her too much credit. I kind of lump her in whith characters like Kuu that where more of a strong plot device than a strong character. While she may have been intregal to the plot almost everything she did could have been done by an inanimate object. She is more a writer's conveniece. Therefore my vote goes to Letopanyu Spoor. |

Match B-25: Franz d'Epinay (Gankutsuou)
Much as I like Balalaika, I can't vote for her any further since her badassery and flawlessness as a character make her seem a bit shallow. I have yet to see Gankutsuou, but I will continue to vote for Franz for what I've heard and read up about his character being devoted to saving his best friend possessed by the Count. Match B-26: Kurz Weber (Full Metal Panic) Shikamaru's unique for a shounen anime character in that he heavily plots things out against his foes in battle. But many of his showings of intelligence are against less intelligent foes and his unenthusiastic personality isn't too appealing as a character. Beyond being the perverted comic relief, Kurz's impressive sniping skills and his easygoing personality make him a more appealing supportive character that I have to vote for him. Match B-27: Cornelia vi Britannia (Code Geass) I see this being a clash between Cornelia and Winry as Hosaka doesn't have enough to his character that would match up to these two headstrong gals. I'm gonna continue to press my support for Cornelia. While she takes on as much of a role in supporting someone as Winry (Eupehmia), she has more active involvement in some of her show's major events where she is the first major character to be in the way of Lelouch's goals and spoiler[later plays a indirect major help in subduing VV's mecha for the Black Knights in the second season]. Her hatred of foreigners serves as a representation of the racial prejudice and discrimination that Britannia displays towards those they have conquered and even while seeming to be a villain, she shows honorable traits through her care for younger sister Euphemia and spoiler[trying to stop the world destroying goals of the Emperor and Schneizel in the second season where she was willing to turn against both leaders to oppose them.] Match B-28: Letopanyu Spoor (Stars franchise) As much as I like RahXephon, Reika comes across more as a plot device to push along the show's major events and lacking enough personality and background to connect with her character. I also can't really find anything that could connect me with Leopold's character from what I've read up on him. So I guess I'm gonna be rooting for the aloof, yet intelligent Admiral Spoor this round. Last edited by Ggultra2764 on Tue Jun 22, 2010 12:29 pm; edited 1 time in total |

I feel that this comment is quite misleading. While indeed most of Shikimaru's opponent's where less intelligent than him he was supposed to be some kind of supergenius. They do not grow on trees. Indeed other than one of his first fights I don't think he ever faught anyone stupid. And often the enemy is both intelligent and about 30 times more powerful than he is. Shikimaru also has a large emotional and character building effect on quite a few characters in Naruto.(An chievement in itself) Whearas Kurz just seemed to turn up whenever someone needed a pretty boy to use the sniper rifle. Or whenever they needed to bring in Ero_Gunzo. I will re-iterate my opinion that while FMP is clearly the superior show Kurz does not deserve to win this round. |

Ooh~ So happy to see Cornelia getting the love she deserves. She's one of the most bada$$ women on a show that really packs them in (yay, Kallen!). So here are my votes:
Group B-25 Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Group B-26 uh, no opinion... ^^; Group B-27 Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass Group B-28 (kinda surprised this guy is in here) Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Balalaika is an easy pick for me. I loved her presence in Black Lagoon and she's a deeper character than just "shoot" and "be snarky". There is true meat to her "bones" that makes her appealing beyond the "it's a badass with a gun" thing. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise Here is the power of Shikamaru: he singlehandedly kept me watching Naruto way beyond the point when all of the other characters wore out their welcome--aka, probably a full 150 episodes. He is someone who oozes cool, despite not giving a damn what people think of him. His abilities are amazing, and watching him chess-move his way through conflicts is akin to reading an Agatha Christie novel. Shikamaru is the surprising protege of Naruto's generation and there is no one else you'd rather have on your team than him. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Easy vote for Winry here. Not much to say that hasn't been said already in this tourny, but she's a great supporting character. I don't see her being quite strong enough to win the whole thing, but currently she has yet to meet any real competition. Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise[/quote] Going to have to vote Leo again. A part of my loyalty is definitely based on having seen (and loved) Scrapped Princess, while not having watched either of the other series. Still, Leo is the sort of character that I love. Initially I started off not liking him. He had this bright-eyed innocence that can tick me right off. However, throughout the series his character becomes more complex and he serves an important role, even as his fighting skills are completely overshadowed by the main characters. While multiple characters (including Chris) have to make decisions about loyalty as they chose whether or not to support the scrapped princess, Leo's journey is the most beautiful. |

DarkCyradis, your votes won't be counted unless you vote for all matches and provide reasons for why you voted for each character.

Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Balalaika is a more memorable character. The sole reason that she is the leader of the Russian crime syndicate assures that she has to have a strong presence. I haven't seen Black Lagoon for a while and I forget a lot of scenes from this series, but I remember Balalaika's air of ruthlessness. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise I don't care either way, so my votes goes to Kurz Weber, but I can change my vote if convincing arguments against him or in favour of his opponent are made. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Winry Rockbell seems to be the best choice. This vote is due to others’ conviction that she is the most worthy, though Hosaka also seems to be an interesting character. Cornelia doesn’t really stand out in her series. She is another ***hole in a series full of ***holes, including the main character himself. Unlike Balalaika, who manages to make a more memorable impression despite being a badass in a series full of badasses. Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise Without a shadow of a doubt Letopanyu Spoor is one of the most colourful characters in anime. She definitely deserves to advance. Leo is funny, but Spoor, who makes her presence felt every time she appears, is more than a match for him. I have seen around 19 episodes of RahXephon, but it is not my cup of tea and I hardly remember anything and so far I haven't seen convincing arguments for Reika. Balalaika, Black Lagoon Reason: I agree with abunai that Balalaika constantly projects an aura of competent murderousness. I mean she is one of the most cold, calculating, and driven supporting characters period. She'd give Revy a run for her money in a badass tournament too, and is just a hair away from being bad enough to have dominated the villain tournament. She supports the show by lending that cold efficiency that really is a perfect foil for the atmosphere and attitude aboard the Lagoon. Group B-26 Shikamaru, Naruto franchise Reason: I don't think either really has that much of an impact on the show in the long run nor supports the main cast as well as other supporting characters in their respective show. I'm giving Shikamaru my vote because I simply think between the 2 he's the more competent of them. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise Reason: No real question here who should win. She's not some fluff character used simply as motivation. She has real depth on her own and a moving history herself. Plus she is one of the biggest supportive elements for Ed and Al. Even when she's not with them she helps drive the plot on and really makes a lasting impact on the show and characters. She's also constantly supportive of Ed and Al and they arguably couldn't get through everything without her friendship and actual expertise and skills. Maybe not the strongest in the tournament but easily should win this round. Group B-28 Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise Reason: For me, like others, this is a battle between Reika and Letopanyu. And like others while she does have a good impact on the show I feel Reika is more of a plot device used to highlight and push the story along. Now the same can be said about Letopanyu probably. The difference, and deciding factor for me, though is Reika is weaker as a character on her own accord where as Letopanyu most certainly is not, She's extremely competent, very smart and resourceful, and very cunning. On her own she excels as a supporting character better then Reika does and I think in the long run has a deeper bond with the main cast as well. Plus it doesn't hurt she's damn sexy with her mature womanly charms and those hips. MMmmm yes. Now that could be one epic cougar lol. (no disrespect meant to the ladies here) |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon Ouch. Having submitted Franz myself, I now have to vote against him. If it was anyone else in this round, I'd have voted for him. Balalaika, however, is so memorable and immediately recognisable, and such a crucial character of the series (her roles ranging from comedy to the most sinister and cynical parts of the series), that she often makes the show worth watching by herself. Sorry Franz, life's unfair. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise To be fair to the other guy, I even looked him up on Wiki, though never planned to vote for him... Kurz is the jolly comrade, a character essential to a war story, which FMP! is in many ways. He fulfils that role admirably, and if one takes into account all the back stories (and considers that the action really started only in TSR, with the main plot beginning after), is an even more likeable character. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise I thought Winry wouldn't get any more "consolation votes" from me, but I think her opponents this round are just not as likeable as her. I remember her from that series, and I remember pitying her, and looking forward to her appearances on screen. That's enough for me. Group B-28 Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise I'll follow the character that, by her profile and the arguments on here, is definitely the best. I would say that the video shows her as a little too artificially laid back, but then it may just be an impression. But if we take a look at the others... Leopold? No, not the same level. Reika? Mmmh... I would say that she is less of a character and more of a manifestation of the plot. I think she performs her role well, but that puts a lot of distance between her and the viewers. |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Voting for: Franz Because: Balalaika is a great character, and she certainly makes the show more interesting in a wide variety of ways, but Franz really shouldn't be losing this badly. He's one of the few characters in Gankutsuou who isn't simply swept along in the Count's machinations and makes active efforts to seek the truth. Plus, he has considerable patience, dealing with Albert's foolishness and ungratefulness as much as he does. Group B-19 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise Voting for: Kurz Because: While Shikamaru is probably the most interesting character in Naruto, this is at least partly because the rest of the cast is full of such typical cookie-cutter shonen characters that he stands so high above them. He may make the series more tolerable, but Kurz makes an already good series more interesting. Group B-21 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Voting for: Hosaka Because: It's pretty obvious who's going to win this one, but I have to throw some support behind the most extravagant character in one of the most bizarre mundane comedies in recent years. Group B-23 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise Voting for: Spoor Because: For me, this is something of a tough choice between Leo and Spoor. Reika doesn't have a whole lot going on as a character; primarily she's just mysterious. Leo is brave and gallant, and his enthusiasm and optimism is an excellent contrast to Shannon. But then there's Letopanyu Spoor, who manages to be both ruthless and classy at the same time. Whether she's displaying her battlefield prowess or teasing her exasperated subordinate, she's a delight to watch. |

Balalaika, Black Lagoon vs. Franz d’Epinay, Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo Balalaika has far too much presence, and is far more memorable to be a match for the much more developed, but more subtle Franz. Without her, much of the mood and atmosphere of the series would be lost. Group B-26 Kurz Weber, Full Metal Panic! franchise vs. Shikamaru, Naruto franchise While either choice will likely lose next round, Kurz Weber seems like the more well rounded character excelling as silly goofy ball while still proving himself in his more serious roles. Group B-27 Winry Rockbell, Fullmetal Alchemist franchise vs. Cornelia li Britannia, Code Geass vs. Hosaka, Minami-ke Though it appears that Winry will win this one soundly, I have to pay my respects to Hosaka, who I personally think contributes far more to the enjoyability of his show far more than a character that only extends narrowly behind a mixture of cliches, while remaining passably strong due to a lot of character development. While probably fruitless, here is last minute campaign post for Hosaka based on another one of my posts. Hosaka is as about as good as you can get as far as supporting comic relief characters go. He makes you laugh, he's memorable, he's epic, and he is one of the main reasons why people watch the series. His humor is also far more varied than being just a scene stealer, and he also dominates all attention whenever he appears. He's also a king of the mental mind theater, which even gives us another insight into his weird mind. As you can see from his clip, he is not a pushover when it comes to comedy and he is always the center of attention whenever he has a scene. And unlike Nabeshin or Renge's clips, Hosaka has even better moments than the ones shown. Theses clips are some of his earliest efforts and some of his later ones are even more memorable and impressive. Group B-28 Leopold Scorpse, Scrapped Princess vs. Reika Mishima, RahXephon vs. Letopanyu Spoor, Crest/Banner of the Stars franchise As a far more passionate and memorable character, Spoor should have no problem here. It will be interesting to see how she fares next round against a foe that is easily ten times more popular that also comes from a very well respected franchise.
