That was an excellent review. And you know something else? You've convinced me that a robot which can transform into a giant fist is not as silly as it sounds. Good going.

I know I had that robot design some time in the late 1970s/early 1980s!

They marketed a series of Japanese toys in the US as "Shogun Warriors" and Mazinger Z was one of the designs they used.

It was a big robot. Basically, all he could do was fire missiles from one of his arms. You could move the arms up and down, too, but that was about it.

I used to know over small wooden blocks with those missiles. This had to have been before that alleged Galactica incident where some dumb kid killed himself with a Viper missile. Why you would turn a toy on yourself and do that is beyond me...!

Still, B-B guns have been around for decades and there never really was any big recall for those. National stupidity and incredibly over-sensitive parentism didn't hit until the late 1960s/early 1970s as I can recall...

I remember one of the things that made me nervous about Shin Mazinger in its first episode was the fingers just kind of freely sticking out of Z's back in certain scenes - it just looked silly. Er, sillier than usual, I mean!

Of course, after that chaotic "ok so this stuff is gonna happen" first episode, the show proceeded to blow my socks off and shut me right the hell up, and the fingers on the back ended up being rather endearing (there's that certain scene in the very last episode!).

Hah! I know what you're talking about! Anime hyper spoiler[The double finger point! Anime hyper]

I've been wanting this toy since the show started airing! I looked at it at my local convention, but of COURSE, if it's not NaruMoeBleach, they didn't have it... Anime cry I'm seriously thinking of going behind my wife's back and ordering that... >_> Like now!

Also, I'm glad to hear you liked it so much and that there's a fellow robot fan on the ANN staff now, Mr. Cabrera! ^^ It seemed like everyone else on the staff and board dumped on the show... Sad I thus hereby proclaim this review to SURPASS BOTH GOD -AND- DEVIL!!!! Anime hyper

MAZIN POWEEEEEEEEEEEEER!!!!!!!!!! FUUUUUUUUUUUUULL POWEEEEEEEEER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anime hyper

Well.. Actually, in this case, this may be more appropriate!

I don't think toys get much more awesome than turning into a giant god damn fist. Very nice!

I guess we all know what the reviewer looks like now, too, seeing as he's reflected in every single image, lol.

I acctually have this soul of chogokin figure and agree the details are very high and that the figure itself is really cool, although in the manual it suggest that you twist the head slightly just so the fin of the hover pilder tucks in just right, it'll only take minor damage in the form of the tip bending If you don't set the head right which is only posible if you rush the change. 100 bucks is on the steep side, but if you shop around a bit you might get it at a good price. I found this figure on amazon for around 80 dollars.

Awesome figure, but I'm not much of a Mazinger fan. The SoCs I plan to get are GunBuster, Daimos, and Voltes V.

Just got the Great Impact Model Gurren Lagann today. R Toys also has the Max Gokin Godannar (Twin Drive Mode), which looks great paired up with the GL going by the Collection DX review (which speculated that Max Factory made the deluxe GL for Konami).

Yeah, Shin Mazinger can only get respect on a toy review as modern fans must enjoy these shows ironically, not as the showcase of the talents of Yasuhiro Imagawa with the imagination and characters of Go Nagai tackle the original Super Robot, the originator of an entire genre with the Hot Blooded action it deserves.

The design of the Mazinger Z in Shin Mazinger was taken from Ken Ishikawa's Mazinger manga (the one with the kedora and all).

At first when I was looking over these pictures, I thought "I wonder if there's a way I can not show up in the frame."

There isn't. It's too shiny for that.

You say that like shiny is a bad thing.

Big Bang Fist sounds ridiculous; it sounds awesome. It sounds ridiculously awesome.

Its a super robot. Ridiculously awesome is all part and parcel when it comes to super robots. I was always kinda weary of going Chogokin, since the price would make you want to store them away and not show them off, but darn you Dave for making me interested in this Chogokin. Darn you!

Well, you had me reading that from start to finish despite the fact that I've never been the least interested in purchasing any super robots. Fantastic review! Oh, and I loved the bit about your dog. Wink
