I ended up at the video store last night because the wife wanted to go. I ended up buying Blood, and Azumanga Daioh(only because Netflix doesn't have DVD 5 anymore grr), and the Blu Ray release of Basilisk.

$203 on the Visa card. Ow.

So without counting I would say I have somewhere between $3K to $5K invested in this pastime. What's your total? Is this typical?

Follow up question: Does this collection have any resale value? I notice a lot of good titles go out of print and become hard to find often within two years. You would think that would create a market for used DVDs sort of like baseball cards.

Since I started collecting anime in January of 2009, I think I have sunk at least $5,500 in anime alone. It could be more, I doubt it is less. My merchanise collection is tiny (2 figures and a wall scroll which represents a little over $90) and my manga collection is pretty small too (maybe $500?)

At any rate, given my after tax income and given that I should be saving to buy a condo/townhouse, this does not represent a particularly wise expenditure. But I'm enjoying it and you only live once, so screw it.

Some questions are best left unanswered. Wink

It's somewhere in the five figures, 30-40k maybe.

As for resale value, unless you have something rare/and or sought after, anime is a pretty shitty investment.

I can't even guess just how much I have spent on anime over the years. Let's just say that I used to own Star Blazers (only the Iscandar series) on VHS, and those were $20 each (with only 2 episodes) times about 18-19 tapes...

Also I am a member of the Best Buy Rewards Premium Silver card, in order to qualify for that you have to spend $2,500 anually at Best Buy. Not all the purchases I made when I qualified (I don't think I will qualify this year) were anime, but a vast majority was.

As for the "resale" value. It really depends. Unlike baseball cards, the older the series is the less value it has. Even if it is "out of print" you can usually get used copies (unless it is really really hard to find) pretty cheap. Personally I recently sold off all 18 DVDs of Gatchaman, and got $27 at Half-Price Books. The most that I ever got was maybe $50 in store credit (at Hastings).

At first I didn't know about fansubs, so I bought all my Anime at bricks and mortar stores, often at full retail price. During this period I spent NZ$9,500 on my Anime collection.

Then I sort of went off Anime and only downloaded a show here or there.

But then last year I started collecting again, and in a pretty decent way.

Altogether, I know I've spent around NZ$15,000, which is US$10,524.45.

Not bad, eh?

I was adding up roughly what I spent on each show I have, and I was excited that I hadn't broke into four digits yet. Then I remembered I lent School Rumble to a friend, and Princess Tutu is in my DVD player.

1021 dollars on anime alone, not counting a few series I'm waiting to sell, because they were awful.

At 45 parts of different series, each series cost roughly $22, which isn't bad.

I only have five out of print series, out of print meaning you couldn't get it dirt cheap at TRSI; Magic User's Club OAV, Someday's Dreamers with the pretty box which is why it cost so much, pieces of Sailor Moon, all the movies and and 2 SuperS dvds, and Magical Project S volume 1 on VHS, and fragments of Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I couldn't sell my collection for much of anything, and the shows worth any money at all, I do not want to sell.

I'm not even going to look at my manga, the truth could kill me, I paid list price for 80% of it. Crying or Very sad

And here I thought I was going over the top. You guys are amazing.

The fact is I don't really mind the investment in the good stuff. It is one thing to have something like ROD the TV or Black Lagoon on the shelf -- quite another to have Green Green or Sister Princess or Devil may Cry and know you paid good money for it.

You paid good money for Sister Princess? By good money do you mean you bought it at list price, or that you spent 22 dollars from a bargain bin?

I am a new anime fan (4 years!) so my collection is small. I have only spent about $4,466.74 USD. If it wasn't for the recent anime slowdown in licenses and releases it would probably be a lot more.

Agreed on both counts.

I was spending something like 2k a year on anime the last time I figured this out... that was something like 5 years ago. it didn't include adding up the cost of everything I'd bough prior to figuring that out.

All I know for sure is, I will never get nearly what I spent on my anime back by selling it- as a general rule, any media (be it CDs, video, video games, or books) does not gain much by way of collector's value. Anyone buying for that reason really needs someone else doing their 401k for them. Laughing

Comic books resale value pretty much died around 2000 when graphic novel sales went up- something's only really worth something when suddently it's out of print and everyone wants it, and in most situations like that, it'll find it's way back to print.

I think I've usually spent around 50-80 on comics/manga a month for the past 10 years, so let's say 60 bucks/month/10 years..... 7200 on comics/manga, not counting random trips to bookstores or cons or used book stores or stuff I hadn't preorders or whatever. I feel less bad about my anime spending as a lot of it was bought on sale or used, but looking up at my Haibane Renmei dvd's, bought when import costs rom the US made Pioneer titles very expensive, there's about 210 bucks right there [60 for box/1, 2/3/5 for 50 each.... and that's without tax]. It adds up over time. When people see your collection, they often freak out because of how much it must of cost, but when you take into consideration it's over the course of 10 or more years, it's not that bad. But still scary in it's own way Smile

I buy my stuff for my collection and my entertainment, not for resale value. DVD's and VHS don't have much resale value, though books seem a bit better in that there's more outlets for used copies.

Hmm, DVDs, manga, CDs, figures, posters/wallscrolls, etc.? I'm sure it's got to be exceeding $10,000. Geez, I don't even want to think about it now. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

I'd say I've put about $1000. Considering that I've been watching anime for close to ten years, that ain't that much. I would say that about $600 went to DVDs and $400 went to gunpla and figures, though
nowadays my money just goes into the latter category.

I just did a rough calculation of what I see on my shelves.

It appears I've spent ~$1300 on anime DVD boxsets/thinpacks (mostly $25-30 for 12-14 episode series & $50-60 for 24-26 episode series) and ~$300 on anime movies ($20-25 each).

Since I don't buy DVD singles, manga, and negligible merchandise, $1,600 is probably the extent of my anime-related purchases over the past 10 years.

Hmm, let's see...

I have 40 single DVDs, 5 double-wide case sets, and one 7-disc box, which is the flimsiest, cheapest-ass, most annoying-to-remove-discs-from-ever box I've yet to encounter. Anyway, figuring in what I got on sale, that's about ~$800. Counting my figures, it comes closer to ~$900, not including the ones I was given as gifts - that would bring the total closer to ~$1000. Not bad for someone who's been into anime for six years and has had a paying job for only five months of that.

My manga collection (54 volumes) is another $400-500, and if y'all want me to get into cosplay, well, the numbers would start heading into 'embarrassing' territory.

...although considering what some of the rest of you have spent on just anime, maybe not.
