Man, so much complaining about Hebert's performance as Kamina. I'm getting a little tired of seeing it.

Yeah, tell me about it. I had that transition somewhat spoiled for me, though. During a trip to Japan over new year's, I was in a DVD store and I happened to see a cover that had Simon and Nia looking suspiciously older... Glad to hear that the English performance is measuring up to the original. I haven't heard much of Hynden Wlach, but I have a feeling she'll be good as Nia. Can't wait for the dub discs. |

I don't see how you can say the voice of Nia is subdued but I certainly agree it is notable. I found Nia's voice beyond agitating, it bothered me to the point of distraction. Her voice was like a shrill whisper, or if you prefer a very high pitched whisper, that only dogs could hear it and I wouldn't wish that on them. I agree her character was interesting and even key to a lot of events that occur in this arc but her voice just ruined everything for me.

Great review! I liked how you talked about the English broadcast as well in this review. And I agree with you about Kyle Herbert's rendition of Kamina. He was my least favorite of the dub voices but by episode 8 I think he definitely got Kamina's spirit down.
On a personal level the only things I disagree with you about are the music (which I think is fantastic) and Nia's hair (her short look was my favorite). |

I suppose it's difficult to comment on there only being a sub release at the moment, but can anyone confirm or deny the rumors that the subtitles are merely "dubtitles", ala the Zeta Gundam subtitles? That is, are they exactly the same as the dub script?

I'd disagree strongly about the music not being a strong suit of the series. The "happily ever after" scene is probably one of the most emotionally powerful I've ever seen, although I suppose the music hasn't really come into play THAT much yet, but it plays such a massive role in the last arc, inspiring MANLY TEARS OF AWESOMENESS for almost the whole last 2 episodes.

I honestly didn't think Kamina's dub voice was nearly as bad as Viral's. He sounded like a PMS geek the whole time, imo. Kamina just sounded un-manly.
Nia's dub voice is great, imo. I really like it. :3 Not as good as japanese, but pretty dang good. Also, I liked Nia's short hair, I thought it was adorable. And I love the music. C: |

I'd disagree strongly too, and I'm only about halfway through the series myself. I've had several of the songs stuck in my head for weeks now, particularly the rock-ish main themes of Viral and Gurren-Lagann itself. The orchestral work is great as well; it really helps reinforce that whole "awesome manly spirit" vibe. |

I'd be curious to know how and where you've heard Nia's English dubbed voice, given that episode 9 hasn't aired yet on Sci Fi Channel and none of the episodes have yet been released in English dub form on DVD.
I recorded the first two episodes on my DVR, and with some finagling was able to play its audio while playing the subtitled episode on my DVD player. The English script is actually remarkably close to the subtitles but just enough different that it's almost certainly not "dubtitles." |

A translated list of the opening credits and each unique set of ending credits plays at the very end of each disc, as is standard operating procedure for all of Bandai's DVDs for which the original Japanese text opening and ending sequences were used, and for which credits are not translated on an insert (though sometimes we've seen both). |

There were clips of Nia's dub voice that were played at conventions that have since circulated around the net. So I am guessing that's how. |

I still feel like they are using the dub script as subtitles for these releases. When I first mentioned it on the forum, people immediately said things along the lines of "Don't you mean its different from the ones they use in the fansubs you love so much. Have you ever considered that the one used in the DVD is a more strict translation" and such. I replied saying how they translated the english word "boy" as "hon" as an example of why I felt like this and my reply was deleted so I assumed that there was some authority on these forums that knew otherwise that probably knew Japanese.
This time, I want confirmation. The script I'm reading sounds too exact with the dub I heard and anime expo and the few episodes I saw on Sci-fi. Also, in episode 13, when Viral was asking where Kamina was, Simon said in Japanese "aniki wa...aniki wa shin dayo" or something like that and it translated to "my bro was...if you're looking for my bro he's dead." Now this and several other instances where what I thought was a declarative sentence was translated into a question and vice versa led me to believe that Bandai was using the english script as subtitles for the subtitle only version. Can someone who speaks Japanese confirm this? I know it's something minor and it doesn't create a major difference in the story, but many of the most memorable moments are compromised and sometimes it felt like it didn't give off the same feeling I felt when I first saw the anime. Also, when I paid for a subtitled version of Gurren Lagann, what I assumed I would get is a more direct translation than the dub, but all I'm really paying for is to get Gurren Lagann earlier and cheaper than the hybrid DVD. I slightly feel cheated even though I don't deserve to feel that way considering I'm getting a third of the series for the price it would normally cost for 4 episodes. |
