I wouldn't say that. I think that Maaya was far better when Yoko Kanno was writing her songs; her new stuff is really more on the 'average, but still good' side, as opposed to some of her earlier work, which completely blew me away. Still, it can't be denied that the girl can sing. I wish my voice was that great. Maaya also has an amazing range of both pitch and emotion, from the happy-go-lucky Mameshiba (one of my favorite songs ever) to Here, which was the reason I bought her Nikopachi collection, and which I listened to on loop for nearly an entire day. Needless to say, my vote goes to Maaya. Shimokawa Mikuni has always grated on me for some reason; I guess she's just not my thing. |

I've heard a few more songs from Maaya since my last post, most of which from Tsubasa Chrocniles. I've also heard one of Mikuni Shimokawa's anime theme cover albums. In which case I think Maaya Sakamoto held up much better and overall I think it's still really tight for me. "Hemisphere" vs. "Minami Kaze", what a choice, those are two of my favourite songs and to put them against each other is painful just like this. I still need to hear more of Maaya Sakamoto though, I wish I had that Nikopachi album. It'd probably help a lot but for now my decision still remains I suppose - Mikuni Shimokawa.

Well I'm a fan of Yoko Kanno but I'm not going by Maaya Sakamoto's side. I'm also bit relieved that they're not working together anymore *dodges tomatoes*. At first listen, I like the timbre and power of Mikuni's voice better, but Maaya's in expression.
My favorite Maaya song would have to be Gravity because it's very expressive. I haven't heard that much from Mikuni Shimokawa, so I won't be voting here because I have to hear more to judge. On a side note, Maaya, Mai Yamane and Origa had a live performance this year in Korea performing Kanno's compositions. While there were a lot of Maaya fans in attendance, most people noticed that she was easily outshined by the two other songstresses live. |

Mikuni definitely o.O... Even though Maaya hasa good voice, and her ED theme for TRC was pretty nice, i'd prefer Mikuni, songs are mroe favored by me

Maaya Sakamoto. I think when she worked with Yoko Kanno she was at her best, they made beautiful and catchy songs together. But with Kanno or not, Maaya has a wonderfully sweet voice that I can appreciate. My favorite songs she's done for anime are "Platinum" from CCS, "Yakusoku wa Iranai" from Escaflowne, and "Hemisphere" from Rahxephon.
Mikuni Shimokawa has a great voice, no denying that. "All the Way" from Kino's Journey is fantastic. But I haven't heard too much of her otherwise and the others songs I did hear didn't grab my attention. I've heard some of the Full Metal Panic songs Mikuni's done; I thought they were nice but a little on the boring side. *shrugs* |

Being a Maaya Sakamoto fan and having not heard of too many of Mikuni Shimokawa's songs, I can't give an unbiased opinion (is that an oxymoron?). From what I have heard though, I do think that Maaya expresses more emotion through her singing voice than Mikuni does.

I would agree that Maaya invokes more emotion in her songs than Mikuni however a lot of that has to do with Yoko Kanno. Who, from what I know, was very specific in how she would sing a note, much less a song. And, I think she's lost that a bit since she went solo (in the sense of not having Kanno at her side).
Everytime, I post here I rethink the idea. I recently heard "Garden of Everything" that was by Maaya Sakamoto, and Steve Conte. A beautiful song. And, I still listen to a lot of her songs unfortunately it's not been the same for Mikuni Shimokawa. Every once in a while I'll play "Tomorrow" or "Karenai Hana" but I still put her ahead of Ms. Sakamoto. |

Maaya Sakamoto, unquestionably. Loop is a great song, and the singer's emotion really flows out of it.
