AFP is running an article about Hikaru Utada and other J-Pop stars trying to get their music out in the west.
Can Japanese music make it a crossover to the West?

Y'know, Utada seems like an odd one to pick as a failure, considering she got a big spread in Time Magazine a little while ago (though it was a mid-Sept 2001 issue, so it's understandable if people missed that one). Also, not mentioning that she lives in NYC seems like a pretty big ommission, and iirc, her previous US releases were moderately successful. Right idea, wrong example.

If you have a subscription to Time, you can read the full article here.
EDIT: Looks like you don't have to pay to see it somewhere else on Time.com. Huh. |

*dives into her giant pile of TIME magazines that go back right to 2001.* I have Hikki in a magazine somewhere in my house and I didn't even know it!!! |

It's sad that even J-Music artists that can speak English relatively well can't break into the American music scene. >.<

BTW, does anyone know how to get a hold of the MTV unplugged DVD with Hikaru? I've looked all over, but never found a non-Japanese version. ?? |

I doubt you'll find a non-Japanese version anytime soon. They just don't think there's a market here for their foriegn stuff. Now if Hikki gets big here in the next year, they may just release all their past stuff on Hikki from Japan for all those fans that'll be popping up and idolizing and buying everything they can get their hands on. *hopes they'll do something with her music videos* |

Most of Utada's DVDs are region free, bet that one is too. If she gets popular here, you can bet MTV'll pull that one out of their library |

I wasn't referring to Hikaru. I was thinking of others, like Shiina Ringo or hide, who spoke/speak English pretty well but still can't break into America. I guess we can only hope for the best for Hikki. |

I actually remember reading that article. My boss at the time handed it to me and said, "You're into stuff from Japan. Have you heard of this girl?" I hadn't, but I read the article and learned some interesting stuff (since forgotten). There's a lot of great music all over the place (even an Iraqi death metal band!), and I hope that we can open our doors here in the States to get some more exposure to it. I once went to an eX-girl concert in Seattle, and there was maybe 75 people there. A few months later, Puffy AmiYumi played to about 150 people (this was before their new album came out), so there really hasn't been much turnout for the shows. |
