.....do they HONESTLY think they used their real info?
burner email, username, & likely VPN..... nobody dumb enoguh to do so without making sure they arent found.

I don't remember which one, but I remember years ago the owner of a major piracy site was caught due to using his real-life info for something related to it. These things can absolutely happen.

Criminal investigative digital forensics can absolutely uncover your IP address, ISP, etc., even if you’re using a VPN or an anonymous forum or not giving your legal name online. Someone pays for the internet connection being used, after all, and that payment info has to come from somebody in some country.
They can also absolutely triangulate a location based on public WiFi usage. So yeah.

You do know how a VPN works? Traffic of usually several customers is routed through a single VPN exit node(unless one has paid for a dedicated ip), if the VPN provider doesn't keep logs good luck trying to figure out who among them is the one you're after, assuming you even manage to find all ips accessing that node server at that particular point in time. Triangulating would only get you said exit node... Yes, someone pays for the connection, the vpn company pays for the server the traffic goes through. You're still not closer to uncovering the info you seek...
