Apparently this season will be a single cour as opposed to last season.

As a fan of the franchise, has this adaption been worth watching compared to, say, the later seasons of the original?

Step up from the last few seasons - but unfortunately still nothing all together impressive, especially compared to other high-end Shonen adaptations.

I was wondering about that, since they made no mention of a "Part 1" this time.

Compared to the A-1 Pictures version, it's good.
Compared to the DEEN & Marvy Jack version, it's absolutely amazing.

Story wise, it's not as stretched out as the final few seasons of SDS was, they at least put some effort to pushing the story along and keeping it consistent.

This is good to know, I’ve been putting off watching the first season but I have heard in terms of quality it has been a step up from SDS, guess I might just start binging over the weekend.

This season can be difficult to watch weekly (much like before with this series), though the subs are only 1 episode behind right now, they are sometimes 2 behind.
