I wasn't expecting much going in to it, but this turned out to be amazing. I really hope we can get more in the future.
Also, seeing the Marineford battle from the ground level was a great contrast to how it's previously been shown in such a horrifying way for all the rank and file fighters.

Well, if this is the best way to dip dip one's toes into the franchise, then I guess I'll give it a shot.

This is a pretty terrible introduction, it throws a ton of references and call-backs at the viewer very quickly and without explaining anything. And the whole thing is a love letter to the fans, its core conceit is being a 20 minute thesis on what makes One Piece special to those who love it - which is lost if you don't share that love.

Not really. This special expects from you to be caught up to episode 521 at least. It's very much meant for existing fans like the title suggests.

How does the special episode's focus on ordinary characters impacted by the Straw Hats' adventures contribute to the overall One Piece narrative and fan experience?

Eh, it's fine. As someone only dipping into One Piece rarely and not getting the bigger narrative picture, I could still enjoy this special plenty. It has its own characters and the story is wrapped up nicely at the end. Sure, you don't get many of the references but you can easily understand the gist of it. Not understanding everything also ties in nicely with the perspective of ordinary people, so you could say it's fitting to get lost a bit in some of the scenes.

When I saw this on my next episode list I almost just ignored it like I do with all non main story episodes. But given love live is the only show I'm watching this season I decided to give it a shot. And honestly I was blown away. I didn't really look into it and thought we were just getting another recap of sorts. Happy I was wrong and this was fantastic.

Like I already said, it's more than just references. The whole point of the special is for the viewer to feel a connection between themselves and the characters because they likewise have this emotional attachment to the Straw Hats. If you don't have that because you don't even know what the series is, the entire thing flies over your head and you're getting a fraction of what you're meant to get out of it.

I really enjoyed this. It looked fantastic and told an enjoyable story in a single episode.

My favorite part was the flashback to the battle at Marine Ford. Seeing that battle through the eyes of one of those rank-and-file marines really brought home how TERRIFYING it would be to be right in the middle of that without superpowers of any sort -- Mount Olympus-style stuff going on all around, you'd have to be thinking: "What in the world am I even doing here!?"
