Kinda, as I really enjoyed some of them. I believe the reason it's so rarely done these days is because of cost and time concerns, which ironically is the same reason they gave for not licensing the original JP songs. There are also some artists like MindaRyn, YOASOBI and One Ok Rock who often release the same song in both English and Japanese, and sometimes the ENG version is used for the ENG dub of the show the song is used in. One example I can think of is MindaRyn's Blue Rose Knows, the ED for By The Grace of the Gods S1, though sadly that song never got a full ENG version for some reason.
Obviously music is subjective but there are some ENG OPs/EDs that I like just as much as or better than the JP ones. Some of my favorites include Unbeatable (Pokemon Advanced Battle), We Will Be Heroes (Pokemon DP Battle Dimension), Hyperdrive (Yugioh 5Ds (fans actually voted for this song)), Never Say Never (Oban: Star Racers) and Take A Chance (Yugioh Zexal S1). While I'm not a fan of all songs (Can You Feel The Power (Yugioh Arc V), the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl rap, and the mostly instrumental Yugioh Duel Monsters and Vrains songs), I do think it's disingenuous and unfair to dismiss all ENG songs as automatically inferior to the JP songs, as some of them are genuinely good songs in their own right and deserve to be recognized as such. You're doing great, omiya. Keep it up. You should be proud digging all this up for us and I and many of us are grateful to you. As for you,Flash33,you're largely saying what I've felt for a long time. There are a lot of great English and English version of anime songs, and it's a shame there aren't more of them. They're really great once you listen to them.

4kids was the king of English dubbed songs because their songs were so high quality compared to other English dubbed songs.

I tend to agree with you on that point,mgree0032. I also think that 4Kids made a lot of really great English songs. They also had really talented voice actors and you really can't take either of those away from them. That's what I think anyway.

I'm on YouTube a lot and there are a couple of things I'd love to see someone do there. I'd love to see them go to Japan and show them the best American anime themes and also something else. I'd love to see someone show the Japanese the English language songs of "Sailor Moon." And,I mean the ones from the DIC dub. Many of them are in fact, quite good. From the familiar opening theme to the show to songs like "Power of Love,"the sweet "Nothing at All,"and "She's Got the Power" sung by Stan Bush.
It'd be interesting to see how the Japanese feel about those themes to shows they familiar with. It would be also interesting to see how they feel about the English "Sailor Moon" songs themselves. I'd love to see that, wouldn't you? |

Believe it or not there are actually quite a few Youtube videos of people doing just that (showing JP and sometimes other non ENG speakers as well different language themes), at least with Pokemon anyway. |

Well,Flash33. I saw a few of them. I just wish they did the American anime themes or the English language stuff from "Sailor Moon." I'd be interested in seeing how the Japanese felt about the anime themes made in America. I think they'd like them a great deal. It's a shame that hasn't happened yet.

In terms of actual English versions of existing Japanese songs the only ones I can think of off the top of my head are the ones done for the Funimation dubs of One Piece, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball GT and YuYu Hakusho. Up until E207 of One Piece both OPs and EDs were covered in English (We Are, Believe, Hikari E, Bon Voyage, Glory, Shining Ray, etc.), with the reason they stopped being licensing issues.
Kai OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJCY9IIZBx8 GT OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIMlekRQCsM YYH OP: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHf0-CHdQCo Playlist for One Piece OPs (only the first 4 are official): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCMhVeuFC3ln65bNDSnvvVRED7ZK3mH7J Playlist for One Piece EDs: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2BB9879621F92C26 As a side note while most songs are good in their original languages never underestimate the power of a good cover/translation, as sometimes they can be just as good if not better than the original. EDIT: Another example is MindaRyn who sings many of her songs in both English and Japanese, with some being used as OPs/EDs, though not all of them have full versions of both languages, such as Bluerose Knows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taYpbN8fd-o Some other songs by her include the following: Daylight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2-ygljRjsk Like Flames: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JMSeRPamGo Another is Voidchords with Flare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jekubzaLQ3w Other examples of JP artists performing in both ENG & JP are Nano and One Ok Rock, with far too many examples to list here. Finally here's a JP reaction to ENG Pokemon OPs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa06j3rirLg Last edited by Flash33 on Tue Aug 13, 2024 11:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Well,it's nice to hear some of the old Funimation's English themes. It was pretty good. Thanks for finding them,Flash33. It's interesting you were able to find a video that had some Japanese people commenting on the American "Pokemon" theme. It's a shame it wasn't the American opening but I'll take that. I'd have loved how they would have felt about it,but you can't have everything. I'd have loved to see how the Japanese felt about the U.S. opening compared to the original one.

I'm not sure what you mean by it not being the American opening as it was literally made to be used for the English dub of Pokemon (which fun fact: many other languages use the Pokemon English OPs as their dub OPs but obviously sung in their respective languages), unless you mean an actual official English cover version of the JP OP1, in which case none exist as far as I know. |

Sorry,Flash33. That's not what I meant. What I was talking about was a comparison of both the Japanese and American openings to "Pokemon" and how would a Japanese person feel about seeing them. I think it would be interesting to see. Also, while it might be interesting to see an English version of the original Japanese theme of "Pokemon,"I also don't know if there is anything like that out there. It may happen one day. Who knows?
