As far as I'm aware, it is the percentage of Japan's TV viewing audience that watched the show. |

It's really a poor article in that regards - just two paragraphs of information without context to make sense of that information and then most of the article is just copy-pasted content from previous articles that doesn't tell anything new or help make sense of the meat of the article. This really is just a padded tweet. Reading a Reddit thread without ever touching the article is literally more informative. I get that the headlines is what's important with all the algorithm stuff, but at least put in some proper context so the first question isn't "Is that good?" |

A 3.1% rating would seem very dismal, but I guess somehow that isn't the case.,,,,,,,,,,,

I don't get why this is news worthy. Lupin III Part 6 reached similar ratings while also airing on a late night slot.

As some of the comments here have indicated, I think it would be a good editorial decision for articles like these to include the context - some kind of frame of reference that shows whether the numbers cited are high, low, or otherwise interesting.

Judging from the last four Japanese Animation TV Ranking posts, a 3.1% rating is generally enough to put you around #6 for the most-viewed anime broadcasts of the week. And most of the ones above you are cultural juggernauts like Sazae-san, Detective Conan, and Doraemon. None of the top 10 on any of those posts are late-night broadcasts; they're mostly prime early-evening timeslots, with a few weekend morning kids' shows like One Piece and Curious George.
I mean, Demon Slayer season 2 hit the top tier in a late-night slot, but that's friggin' Demon Slayer.
