I think it was back in one of the first articles discussing the start of this Netflix project (or maybe it was about the One Piece project), but I made a similar point; a live-action adaptation of a popular anime will always have too much baggage for anything but a sterling effort to succeed. There are simply too many bases for the production to cover for it to work due to expectations of it and inevitable comparisons to the existing anime.

In general, the anime fandom is very "hung up" on the way any production tracks with its source material. All one need do is look at the comments section her or on any social media platform regarding any anime based on a pre-existing game or manga or light novel. These remarks can normally be ignored/explained away to some extent due to medium differences. But that becomes harder - still justifiable - with two entries in the visual category.

Add on top of that the already existing predisposition many have against these live-action remakes in the first place, this project would have had to hit every right note to be accepted. I continue to feel like a lot of folks generally seem to think this all is a simple process that keeps getting screwed up, but it's really a very complex and difficult process that they're helping to screw up.

We as anime fans are very spoiled. No other hobby is as ingrained or synergistic with adaptions like anime is. So in another timeline something like Death Note could have been as huge as the Men in Black or The Mask films which had little to do with their mostly obscure comic origins. The problem is Death Note already had a perfect anime adaption, and a bunch of alternate live-action spin-offs in Japan. So by the time America got around to making theirs it was completely pointless and the Death Note fandom had been settled and established, so they rejected it. Cowboy Bebop is in an even worse situation since it was an anime original. The purpose of a live-action adaption for that still remains a mystery.

Really? I don't think it's really a mystery at all. It's a popular franchise. It's still popular to this day. Plus Netflix is getting more and more into anime itself, and live action adaptations. It seems like a no-brainer to me that they might try and capitalize off of the show's popularity. Plus it's a far cry easier to adapt to live action visually then some of their other choices.

It doesn't really matter. There's still people watching it - even if anime fans aren't. They don't care about the critiques

Jupiter's Legacy was the #1 most viewed showed on Netflix the week it came out. It still got canceled thanks to scathing critical reviews and an overinflated budget. I'm hoping the same happens here admittedly, simply because I don't think it's a very good show and the money is better spent elsewhere. So it being watched isn't always a guarantee of renewal, especially when the reactions are this bad.

Not to mention, those views are steady dropping by the day...

It only hit #1 for, like, 2 days and then generated something like 12 million less views/hours than Kevin Hart's new show, which beat it to #1 in its second week. At this point, it's all but out of the Top 10 and only slots in at #10 on the TV list as it heads into Week 3.

Witcher got renewed before it premiered, Daredevil after two weeks, and Arcane after its 4th week/final episodes, so if this is truly something they intend to invest in I'd assume a renewal announcement will be soon. Otherwise...
