It sounds to me like Polygon pushed an article without any updates or corrections. They should have gotten a quote much more recently for the article they pushed.

GKIDS twitter informs me that (since I didn't check out the polygon article) Polygon decided to try and "Well GKIDS wouldn't provide us an update!"

Hilarious "journalism" from Polygon. Seems like WarnerMedia has been cutting off corners for all their animation subsidiary (i.e. RoosterTeeth, Ellation/Crunchyroll, Cartoon Network, etc.) Up until now, we didn't know anything that would pull in subscribers for HBO Max. We'll see if this would make HBO Max a thing or not.

Polygon aside, this is mostly good news.

The Ghibli catalog has some of the greatest films - animated or not - ever. It's always good for them to be accessible to a wide audience, and with the decline of physical media, this will help them continue to be out there for people.

Of course, I already own all of the ones I like on Blu-ray, so their addition won't get me to subscribe, but still...

I suppose they could say that since HBO has a reputation for producing critically acclaimed content, it was a good fit. That said, I think you're right. Ghibli movies are a big deal, and networks are scrambling to justify making their own streaming services by either keeping their own productions for themselves or snapping up exclusive rights. If this and Netflix's licensing of Eva after it sat for years are any indication, we're probably at a point where the owners of more prestigious titles are finally getting the offers they were holding out for.

Polygon has a history of poor journalism. I tend to steer clear of them.

Disney was in Ghibli business only because of John Lasseter.
Now that John Lasseter is gone, Disney have no reason to be in Ghibli business.

That's only partially true. Disney got their hands on the Ghibli library long before Lasseter got involved. Back in the 1990's. Back then, Lasseter wasn't that involved. The only reason they got scared from doing more with it was after Mononoke failed.

But no, their license expired long before the scandal with Lasseter. It was 2018 when Lasseter got me-tooed. The year before that was when GKIDS got the license, IIRC.
