Long live the Barney tapes! I still have Kodocha 1-40 and I ain't getting rid of them no matter how many of the DVDs I've bought!

That said, I need to get to work on my manifesto on the Nadesico ending. One of my favorite series ever, but as soon as I get someone else hooked on it I'm foiled by that final rushed episode that attempts to do everything at once and ultimately achieves nothing.

I still don't feel ADV's in trouble just yet. They're just focusing on what makes them the most money. Besides, closing down all those extra enterprises means they save money which could be used for something profitable-like licensing the popular ex-Geneon titles and expanding their empire. And their work on the upcoming Appleseed 2 dvd has got to mean better opportunities for them! If I'm worried about any company, it's FUNimation, because, all of a sudden, they've been trying to acquire Geneon-esque titles like Black Blood Brothers, instead of going for the stuff Viz got. What's up with that?

It seems to me like Zac said that they're just cutting back on costs but also making sure they don't end up like Geneon did. I'd hate to see the companies go down in not even a year apart from each other.

I remember VHS tapes.

Anyways, I'd agree with being more selective over titles for the companies. As much as I'd love to see a greater number of series get licensed, if they're pieces of crap, then there is no point in bringing them over, especially for financial reasons. It's a sad state that we have to pick and choose in such a niche industry like this, but I wouldn't waste my money on Kyle XY if I were in Japan. I'd go for House and Pushing Daisies.

People don't like paying for crap amongst gold, and we already have way too many B and C quality titles here. People are cheap bastards, and they refuse to pay even if they can afford it. The more choices we have, the more selective we get, and the selection has to shrink. And the cycle repeats itself as people demand more than just mainstream. People are more stingy about a few $20 DVDs than bigger things like a new notebook PC it seems like. Or maybe that's just my observation.

I really wish a major network would just air one anime series. Just one.

I have a strong feeling that a lot of responses to this week's Answerfan question will be tirades on the endings to Neon Genesis Evangelion, The Big O, and Death Note.

How right you are. I was just about to send in one for NGE when I accounted for the fact that they've made 2 movies and now are remaking the whole thing, and that there's probably at least 78 other people writing in about NGE besides me. It's not the ending to the TV series, but they've made a new ending for it already with another in the works. So meh, moot point.

I quit then.

I don't know if this means anything about ADV's state right now, so I'd like someone's opinion on it. My college anime club has been asking viewing permissions from ADV for years, and almost every time, ADV would respond in less than 3 days with permission to show whatever anime was planned. Recently however, someone in our club requested permissions for a particular anime.... again.... and again... and again, until ADV responded WEEKS later saying that they couldn't give permissions. This apparently has never happened before, and it's so extreme that I'm wondering if it has anything to do with ADV's current troubles or something?

Imagine 20 years from now when there will be a article just like this, but reminiscing about the olden days of DVD anime.

I was going to go with Big O... then I remembered how the (mostly American) fan outrage over the ending to the first season prompted a second season, which sucked worse. Nope, not going to touch it. Evangelion maybe, but I'd have to change the beginning and middle too.

Well it seems that Blu-Ray is becoming popular these days, they're the next step up. I'm wondering if MDs will make some kind of comeback.

It won't be an article, it'll be a cybershot of information injected directly into our brains!

Oh man. Somebody asking in such disbelief if people really traded anime fansubs on VHS makes me feel REALLY old in this fandom. I had mountains of video tapes. I had to get rid of a bunch when I did a cross-country move, but I still have some of my old rare ones that still haven't been licensed, like Rose of Versailles, haha. I think I still kept some of the other ones for nostalgia's sake, like Magic Knight Rayearth or Shoujo Kakumei Utena, even though I have both of those on DVD in their entirety now.

i've always considered Tenchi the "Star Wars" of anime, but that's just my opinion.

is Kodocha anime synonymous with the old sub group Kodocha subs? or is this just a coincidence.

It's very interesting to see how trading the old VHS fansubs used to work. Pirates seem to have skipped that step in my country, you see.

By the way, is it just me, or is that the wrong question displaying for the Answerfans responses? I see the old one about directing anime instead of the one about licensing anime.

Aren't we at the start of a recession, right now?

I would imagine ADV being just one of countless other companies preparing for a long drought up ahead.
