What? No dude... Pixar and Disney pull in the major bucks every single year. None of their CG animated fare has ever been a flop! They're guaranteed bank! Only disappointing if they come in under the studio's overinflated expectations. There's a reason we're getting Toy Story 4, and another part of that is the merchandising cash cow.
The reason they went with live-action is because it's cheaper than the Pixar/Disney budget, and the talent pool they need to pay to make it work, and also because Disney/Pixar take a good long time to make each film, whereas Sonic sat in dev hell, and then was rushed out the door. Animation, scratch that, GOOD animation, takes time. Animators need to turn in a few seconds worth of material a day. Live action doesn't. A mix of live-action and animation was the cheapest, gotta go fastest way of shoving this out because they know they're running not just up-hill but on multiple loop-de-loops here to gamble on the public accepting this abomination.

I don't see the big deal. It looks just as bad as every other Hollywood live-action adaption of a cartoon, anime, or video game. Were people expecting different?

I was hoping Sonic would look a little more cartoony.
