This new business arrangement with IDW sounds promising, but I've been skeptical about Tokyopop's reentering the manga localization business since that news broke. They're going to have to do a lot of work to earn back the goodwill of many of us longtime manga fans.

IDW wants this? Umm, ok then?

Also, not gonna lie, I totally missed them returning with three new licenses (none of the titles of which seem to interest me). I really wish they could maybe get back some of their old titles that no one else rescued (like Demon Sacred)

I'm still not 100% sure what this means exactly, do they have Tokyopop entirely under their belt, or just part of it, or what?

On the unrelated news, IDW Publishing has 'rescued' Sonic the Hedgehog comic from Archie Comics. First 4 issues of it will be out at the end of April, then starting May will be 1 issue a month.

Hmm, wasn't the international part of TP actually good? If IDW was handling the English release, I'd be more confident in TP sticking around. Laughing

From what I read back when Tokyopop shut down in North America their EU and Asia Pacific operations continued. In the EU they had a licensing agreement with Bertlesman which I believe is why some titles in NA weren't available for rescue, the license was either US & EU or Worldwide and Tokyopop held onto them for their remaining markets.

I would think that this renewal in NA is being bankrolled by someone else, IDW or their principals maybe, and they may be calling the shots. I don't think anything that was left unfinished in 2010 will ever be revisited, not very likely.

I don't think they can do enough work to earn back my goodwill. I will buy from them only if they get a series I can't let go. They should have simply restarted under a new name. Any name recognition they have here is bad.

Expecting any of the old titles abandoned by Tokyo Pop or others to be rescued is pointless. Very few manga titles have actually been licensed rescued. The main problem is that there are so many titles available that a publisher is not going to take a chance with one where the water has already been poisoned by Tokyo Pop.

Somewhat in the same vein, I am interested in Konohana Kitan but I think I'll wait until they have published it in its entirety first...

My feelings are much the same here. Fortunately, I don't think they'd be able to get any licenses I'd be interested in. The only Tokyopop series I was reading when they ceased their manga operations was Sgt. Frog, but that seems like a long shot for them picking up again, in part because Viz has the digital rights nowadays.

With the exception of Sgt. Frog, I'd only consider picking up a newly licensed Tokyopop release if all the volumes are available. I'd have to wait awhile, but at least such a series would be complete. Even then, it would have to be a series that I really, really want to read.

The only way I will ever trust them again is if they finish up some of their old releases. Future Diary, Dazzle, Aion, Yubisaki Milk Tea, etc etc. I have so many unfinished series staring at me from the bookcase every day because of them.

This was my first thought. Why would they not? As far as branding, I also think they are going to need a miracle to win any faith from the community. I do miss going to Borders though. Sad
