Why did Ren become "Ran" halfway through and then go back to Ren?

I'm glad FUNimation got this. I look forward to adding it to my collection at some point. I have not watched Wolf Children yet but I thought The Girl Who Leapt through Time was very good and Summer Wars was great so I definitely want to see this.

I watched this movie in theaters and I honestly don't see what's great about it. In fact, I'd go as far as to say, I hated it.

Why does this movie get so much slack from people here? The review for Boy and the Beast they have on here is awful and random people keep saying "it's not a good movie because it's not like the others Hosoda directed".

I totally loved this one but I hated Wolf Children - though everyone raves about it.
I guess it's a matter of taste.

Yeah, I loved it too. It seemed like a Shonen series that was intelligently compressed into a two hour movie and then beautifully animated. Characters were distinctive and likable, the romance had resonance to me, the "hidden dark nature of humans" was explored well without being overwrought and the eponymous relationship between the boy and the beast worked a treat for me. Though a vey different movie from Zootopia, it reminded me of that in that it wasn't so much innovative as it simply did what it did perfectly (to my taste obviously).
