I thought you were only reviewing the anime-themed games. Anyway..
Quote: | Gone were the stilted controls, |
The controls were fine. If you want crap controls, play the original Tomb Raider or Silent Hill. In the former one, you had to push two buttons, just to walk, and, in the latter game, you had to bend down, just to slash.
Quote: | unfair inventory management |
The limited inventory was part of the challenge. It adds to the realism by making you plan out your strategy for each level. And technically, you still can only carry a few items in part 4.

Since when? I mean some of them crawl after getting their heads blown off, but head shots are generally the ideal. Have you actually played the old games?!

I'm pretty sure he was referring to people who have played an earlier version of RE4, ya'know, the whole whipping slicey bug tentacles that sprout from blown off heads

Ah. That was actually fun. Sure, you wasted bullets, but it added to the challenge.

Yeah man anime fans hate Resident Evil and it has no bearing on anything that otaku like whatsoever, it's totally irrelevant.
Give me a break.

I wasn't implying they shouldn't like RE; I just was surprised that a non-anime game could be reviewed.

DAMN!
You know, the thing that I'm actually gonna really miss when Resident Evil 5 (which looks beast as hell) comes out is the AIMING (which, I'm not sure was overly forgiving or not... didn't really pay attention)...
I loved the controls here.
That said, you can kill the Las Plagas easily using a flashbang.
Wait, now that I think about it, actually, the people with the matured Las Plagas in them have this tendency from time to time to get their heads blown off even if you don't really go for the head shot; I thought it was either a glitch or a damage thing... not necessarily forgiving aiming (actually, you're as good as you're aim with the wii-mote, which was cool)
Because, I played the hell outta the target practice crap and it seemed pretty accurate in regards to what I was hittting.

I'm the guy who decides what game reviews we publish. Here's my philosophy:
I like anime. I also like games like Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, and Metal Gear Solid.
Are those games directly related to anime? No, but I know anime fans love them and buy them, because I've been to countless anime cons and have been a member of this site for almost a decade now, so I'm gonna assume that these folks like the same things I do, especially since these are the games you see cosplayed at major anime cons and championed on anime forums.
It's not a huge leap in logic. We all know what we like.

I'm surprised that we don't have a Game or an Off-Topic forum here.
I've never played the Wii version because the Wii is still as hard to find as a copy of an Atlus game. But I do have the GameCube version and this is a game you just can't put down. Simply awesome.
Speaking of Atlus, Persona 3 is kickass.

Zac: Well technically, DMC has an anime spin-off, and MGS has Otacon, so they are slightly related to anime. Anyway, you don't have to give me a huge lecture on this one. I was just curious.

I haven't had a chance to play the Wii version yet, but even just playing the Gamecube version is great. Can't wait to play with the new controls and PS2 extras.
To GATSU: RE4 may not be anime-based/themed, but it is from a Japanese gaming company (as is DMC and MGS), so it isn't that surprising. Now, if ANN reviews something like "Halo 3" or "Heavenly Sword," then I'll be a little weirded out.
And as a side-note, the first DMC was actually originally going to be RE4. Shows what can change during development, doesn't it?

Just a personal question for ya Zac, which Resident Evil have you enjoyed the most? Sorry, I'm a Resident Evil addict so I'm just curious which one you enjoyed the most. I will say RE4 did wonders for the series in bringing some much needed life back into the series. Certain parts were predictable for old RE fans but the story was fresh and I personally liked the controls on the Gamecube. Not a huge Nintendo fan but I will say they did that gam right. Loved how at the end you find Ada is working for Wesker. I hope we get a cameo from the man in the black shades in RE5.

Great game, got it for PS2 and have completely maxed it out. I got all the bonus weapons, game modes, everything. Took a while but it was worth it.

RE4 was my least favorite game in the series -apart from Outbreak and the FBS derivatives- it was fun at the begining and it felt good playing as Leon again, but half way through the game it's gotten quickly boring for me since the fun is reduced to "shoot the next horde of enemies" and besides; there was no Umbrella this time around, which made the story less interesting for me and the game feels less connected to the previous -and superior IMO- games in the series.

Ah, Resident Evil 4, I own and played this game on GameCube. I think if I played it again now, I would appreciate it more, though. It was just a really solid game experience.
In response to what you said, Raven Shinobi, RE4 is my most favorite of the series, but then again, it's the only one I've ever played. I've watched some videos of the others and played similar survival horror games, and they just weren't fun, particularly because of the control schemes.
That's probably the reason I'm not going to get Umbrella Chronicles for Wii -- I don't know anything about Umbrella beyond what I've read about Resident Evil on Wikipedia. I don't really know any other RE characters, either, so the game really isn't for me. RE5, on the other hand...That I'm looking forward to.

Yes, a game forum would be great.
Wii shortages will continue through 2007, unfortunately.
Persona 3 does indeed look as such.
Also, I agree with Zac about the game reviews. The anime/manga and game fandom is so close, that it makes sense to review many of these Japanese-developed games on ANN. Besides, would you really want only reviews of bad anime-based games?
