Has there ever been any music in anime that is more towards progressive rock then normal rock/pop? And are there any bands that are progressive?

The closest thing I can think of to Progressive is X Japan, although they tend to be better known for their metal power ballads. Some of X's stuff sounds a bit like Sonata Arctica to me. Art of Life by X is their most progressive sounding song. |

It depends on how you define prog rock as a genre, so I'll try to be specific with my recommendations:
The first band that comes to mind is Supercar. Their sound varies from electronic to alt rock, with a few weird sounds tossed in for good measure. You might also want to check out some of the earlier releases from Suneohair (his 2002 album Sunestyle is a good bet). Other bands that might appeal to you but run a little closer to an alt-rock sound include 100s (Nakamura Kazuyoshi), Fujifabric, the band apart, and (maybe) Kirinji. |

Based on your avatar, I'm going to guess that you're looking for something in the vein of 1970s British progressive rock bands. Honestly, I'm not sure that many, if any, Japanese bands like that have ever really had an impact outside of Japan. However, doing a Google search for Japanese progressive rock seems to turn up quite a few results, so you might want to look into that. |

I can't think of anything that resembles 70s (King Crimson/ Pink Floyd) progressive bands. It is strange that contemporary progressive rock/metal seems to do well in Japan with many bands touring in Japan even more than in the States. Yet they do not have any native prog rock bands. The Dream Theater LIve at Budokan CD/DVD is an amazing album.

So many bands have done albums recorded Live At Budokan albums that even S.O.D. released a Live At Budokan album recorded in New York. Although, I don't think you were using it primarily to emphasize your point. Indeed, it seems to be the case that many styles developed in the United States seem to have better success elsewhere.

Hmm. When I think progressive rock I think of Dream Theater, so how to find a Japanese band like Dream Theater? A group with amazing technical skills and demanding performances...
The closest bands I can think of are Onmyoza, although they cite more heavy metal references such as Judas Priest as their mentors, and some of Janne Da Arc. The guitar skills on most of the Onmyoza tracks are astonishingly good. And their performances are awesome. And, although Janne varies from song to song and album to album, I think that you's guitar skills match up to the best of the best out there. And if you compare Janne to Dream Theater they both have really crazy skilled guitarists and drummers. (Shuji has some crazy drum solos). As to the person who mentioned Supercar, I have to disagree. I think they're more "alt-rock" than "prog-rock." I own their best of album and while they really are experimental, they aren't as technically brilliant as a band like Onmyoza or Janne Da Arc. But you're right that it does depend on how you define the genre. |

I use that site alot and I couldn't for the life of me find were you could seperate bands by country. Thank You. |

No problem. I actually cheated and did a simple search for "Japan" using the site seach tool, getting that link as the first result. |
