I was perfectly fine with Frozen winning. Haven't seen any of the animated shorts; thinking of checking out this one (because it won) and Feral.
But, um...Does the lip syncing seem a bit off to anyone else? It might be because I've seen this sequence a few times in English. In any case, it's okay. It's difficult to hold a candle to the original, anyway.

I have watched almost all the nominees, and I must say Frozen really deserves the award. Frozen is quite an unusual and non-standard for a Disney princess story, and the plot twist is really unexpected.
Since this is an anime site and forum, I guess most of people here would be pro to Miyazaki's The Wind Rises. The Wind Rises is beautifully done and all (and it has historical value too), but it just didn't have enough impact (at least for me).
While the other nominees... The Croods, it just doesn't have enough appeal. Despicable Me 2, most of people would just watch it because of the overrated minions. I haven't watch Ernest & Celestine, but it does look interesting (especially the art style) so I might check it as well.
I'm gonna check Mr. Hublot as well. I really like the previous winner of the shorts, Disney's Paperman, so I hope it'll deliver the same excitement.

Yeah, I really wish The Wind Rises won. I know the Oscars value basically nothing that I do, so I shouldn't expect the things I like to be recognized by them, but I'd really like to see drawn animation win sometimes, and in general see things I really like win sometimes.
The Wind Rises to me is a truly sublime film. I think it's actually one of my top 3-5 favorite movies ever. I have so much to say (which I'll post eventually) that I can't really touch on everything, but it's depiction of someone with the spark of creativity venturing to express himself in a world only sometimes and only tangentially interested was amazing. I also love how it explored the ultra long-term nature of certain kinds of creativity: the present society's immediate desires may run orthogonal to yours, but in the long run, after what they physically created is obsoleted and reduced to simplistic and context-dependent memories, the ideas of your progress remain to inspire and enable others.

It's a dub of a foreign film. CGI is too costly to lipsync properly sometimes.....or they were just too lazy to. It wasnt a bad performance but there's much better Japanese singers they could've used. Shame really. By origiinal I assume you mean the broadway singer chick and not the overautotuned Demi Lovato version.

Eh, not necessarily. Every year that Hayao Miyazaki has had a film nominated, I liked at least one of the competing films more (yes, I'm in the minority who didn't care much for Spirited Away, which I found disjointed and scattershot). Ponyo, which wasn't nominated, is my favourite of the Miyazaki films from this century that I've seen, but, even if that one had been nominated, I'd still have been rooting for Fantastic Mr. Fox over it.
I was indeed rooting for Frozen, although I didn't have a chance to see The Wind Rises before the Oscars, it only just opened in Ottawa this weekend and I'll watch it on Monday.

I'll be watching Ernest and Celestine when it's released on Blu Ray.

I assumed CGI lip syncing is more difficult, but...It's Disney. Thought they'd put a touch more effort into it. I also wish they had chosen someone else. The VA doesn't sound bad as Elsa, but it's missing the strength and resilience of the original.
And, yeah, not Lovato.

The thing about the other nominees is that America had a weak year in animation. Two foreign nominees is about the most you'll see for this category, and here's the list of other eligible American movies:
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2
Turbo
The Smurfs 2
Planes
Epic
Free Birds
Monsters University.
That last one is probably the only other movie with a shot at a nomination.

Very much in agreement with what you said about The Wind Rises. Everyone I know who's seen it, even the ones who had issues with it, kept on thinking about it for days afterwards. It has some much depth and touches on so many interesting themes in such a beautiful, and even subtle, way. Frozen, by comparison, was a pretty good Disney movie with one memorable song (the song, at least, deserved it's oscar even in the movie didn't).

Honestly, it's been my observation that a nice chunk of people on these boards and vocal hardcore anime fans in general tend to kind of reject Miyazaki, often seemingly because they don't like how much more attention he gets in comparison to their favorite directors. Case in point being the vocal minority who thought Puella Magi Madoka Magica should have been nominated instead of The Wind Rises (something that, for good or ill, never would have happened). I actually think it's a pretty interesting phenomena (Ghibli movies have such mass appeal that they're not the exact cup of tea for some people who are into much more niche fandoms? Maybe that's reading into it too much).

From watching the Oscars to just finished watching Wind Rises in the theater, yeah that and Frozen are worthy Top 2 finalists - both as conventional from Hayao Miyazaki and Disney yet both also unconventional in ways. It's actually an apropos retirement film for Miyazaki (assuming he stays retired) - it's like two movies in one.

^ I wouldn't say I reject Hayao Miyazaki exactly, but I don't put him on too high a pedestal either. But I am much more of a fan of anime TV series than I am of anime films, and Miyazaki hasn't really worked much in the TV medium since the days of Future Boy Conan and Sherlock Hound.
EDIT: (that was a reply to koinosuke, not Enurtsol, I didn't feel like quoting.)

shirane: The Wind Rises did as well as it could. And Miyazaki already got his gold. So, in this case, everyone should be happy.

I'll be honest and say that I'd have preferred Metropolis got in that year, if nothing else. But I do appreciate that anime was represented nonetheless.

I can kind of vouch for that, too.

Yeah, I'm still hoping he'll return to Lupin one day, myself.

It's just that he's already got his, and they want their favorites to get acknowledged. But hey, at least Otomo finally got some Winsor recognition.

Wouldn't happen, but nice fantasy.

I haven't seen either movie, so I don't have a right to judge anything just yet.
That said, I have been telling people that Wind Rises had no chance against Frozen. There are plenty of reasons why Wind Rises might be a great film (none of which I can quote or support myself), but Frozen is the better advertised product, it's much more critically acclaimed, and it was the one Disney was gunning on winning. And when Disney guns on an award, they just about always get it. They were behind Spirited Away winning in the first place!
But I just happened to walk to our TV room the moment they were announcing the best animated feature award winner... and for those five seconds of hesitation, despite everything I told people and believed myself, I held my breath in the hopes that Wind Rises might win. And when it didn't, I felt partially dead inside.
I still need to see both movies, though. If Frozen is as nice as people have claimed it to be (I'm not setting actual expectations for it, though), then I won't mind Wind Rises losing. =P

No, they weren't. They were hoping Treasure Planet and/or Lilo & Stitch would succeed. Spirited Away was just a placeholder to give them the advantage in nominee numbers.
Anyway, there's always Kaguya Hime next year.
