yoko kanoo is my fave anime composer but her stuff is so hard to find on legal mp3 sites and i was wondering is there a specific reason why that is? im not asking for downlaods jus a questions on why her songs are hard to find legal.

It's most likely a licensing issue. I don't know how music licensing works between legit mp3 sites and the rights from Japan, but for whatever reason, someone probably just doesn't see any interest in the acquisition, I suppose.
A few of the anime soundtracks she's worked on are available domestically. But aside from that, you're left with either importing her CDs or obtaining her work by "other means," (which of course you've already negated in your opener). It surprises me how so many anime fans praise her work, yet we get more domestic releases of L'Ar~en~ciel / Hyde, Hikaru Utada, The Pillows, or T.M.Revolution instead of Kanno, Kajiura, or heck, I'd even like some Susumu Hirasawa. I guess mainstream stuff is more marketable.. |

Personally, I'm astounded at how many Kanno OSTs don't have domestic releases. Titles like Escaflowne TV, Wolf's Rain (looks like we never got that 2nd OST you promised, Bandai), and friggin Cowboy Bebop, for God's sake, were all huge hits. I mean, I understand why Song to Fly and the Turn A Gundam OSTs were never released over here, but why you can buy the awful Samurai Girl Real Bout High School OST domestically and none of the Cowboy Bebop OSTs is totally beyond me. 
The good news for the folks putting out $30 for each import Kanno CD is it's worth every cent. |

That's because composers are hardly the same as pop stars. We get more mainstream stuff from them because yes, it is more marketable. Fans of crappy american pop would eat them up. It's like saying "Why arent Howard Shore and Danny Elfman getting the recognition they deserve? They're much better than Justin Timberlake and Beyonce." |

I found the second Stand Alone Complex OST at Best Buy for $8. I snapped it up at once, obviously. When I got home and unwrapped it, I found out why it had been marked down so much; the case practically fell apart in my hands, and the cracks suggested someone had stepped on it or something. The CD works fine, though, which is all I really care about anyway.
Anyway, I'm surprised that at least some of Kanno's soundtracks haven't had more domestic releases, especially the Cowboy Bebop OSTs which play more like actual albums than soundtracks. You can enjoy them seperately from the anime, and if you've seen the anime you get that little sigh of memory when you listen to the soundtrack. Same thing with GitS: SAC. I bought the second OST partly because it was cheap and partly because I wanted a legal copy of Rise; I'd never seen the anime before, but I still loved the music because it really doesn't feel like 'background music'. I agree, though; importing Kanno is entirely worth it. |

I still don't get why Bebop wasn't released. Look at the number of fans who watched the anime and loved the OST. It would probably sell more than some pop albums out there

CB had some mainstream success, but it never really made it beyond the niche anime audience. |
