I'm getting it as we speak and since Justin highly recommends it, I'll give this a shot
I think this is totally different from some of the many others buried treasures since this involves a fan restoration, and I want to see how it goes. Thanks for the info, Justin!

I knew this title was going to show up in Buried Treasure sooner or later.
My favorite parts of To-y are the musical interludes that completely break away from the narrative and kind of pause the story, inviting the viewer to stop paying attention to standard plot elements and just enjoy the artwork and music. I've always been fond of this kind of sequence (the cityscape in the rain scenery from Ghost in the Shell, the middle "Krasno Sontse" interlude in Princess Arete, pretty much the last half of Mind Game, etc) and the scenes in To-y were particularly memorable because of the fine animation and art direction, as Justin mentioned in the column. I'm not that big on the music itself, but I'll admit it's aged very well for something so 80's-tastic. The paragraph about fan restoration was very interesting; I had no idea there was a restoration out there for The Thief and The Cobbler! I definitely have to check that out now, since I've only seen glimpses of Richard Williams's masterpiece in various lectures. |

We watched this LD non-stop when it first came out. One of my friends even got an Isami haircut. I've always been a huge visual rock fan and never could get into J-Pop (especially the idol stuff) so I always sided with GASP. We were addicted to both Kamijo's manga and the amazing OVA. Our little group adopted the finger point "Bang" as our personal greeting.
This video started me on a big Barbee Boys mania. I ended up buying a stack of their CDs after hearing Shoto Sunzen (the pool song) which is still one of my favorites. I remember freaking out when I heard Kyoko from Barbee Boys singing the ED song for Boogiepop Phantom. My other friend (Mr. Umemoto) had all of Nokko's albums, and my buddie Racko-F ended up buying all of the PsyS related CDs. I love the Matsuri/Festival song and montage. To-Y was a big part of my late teen years. It is impossible to think of one without thinking of the other. Learning that there are others out there who enjoyed this series gets me a bit emotional. This manga and anime spoke to us generation X and it's odd to think that To-y would be in his 30s now. Thanks for another great article Justin! |

I actually just saw this title get mentioned on a fansub site, and I was checking the out info for it and I was sort of turned off at first, but now damn I am definitely going to check that out. I remember when I first saw the file for To-y the fansub was being done by the To-y restoration group, so I guess I know part of the history of where it came from...Thank you Justin what an awesome column this week!

Pointed witch-hats?!? Oh wow. Can you imagine if that fad had caught on here in the states?
After reading this article, I can't help but think of the upcoming release of Beck. I'm really looking forward to that. It would be great to get my hands on To-y because I still have a working LD player. At least, I think it still works

Wow... I almost skipped this OVA, cause I'd never heard of it... boy am I glad I read buried treasure this time... I normally don't read this column, cause I'm not a big fan of older animation, but after that kind of adoration bestowed on it, I have to check this out.

Wow i didn't think my casual post of the T-oY LD would have such an impact. I had heard of the LD going for around $700 but never could i imagine copies going for as much as $6000, thats simply ludicrous, lol. Even the very rare Daicon III & IV LD never got even slightly close to reaching those levels. Speaking of which i wonder if that too is under consideration for this column.
The video quality of the fan restoration for T-oY is absolutly stunning. You would think a professional anime studio had done the work using a new telecline print. I can't wait to see their next project completed which is the very artsy 'Bobby's Girl', hopefully that will impress enough to also get featured too. Now if only someone could fansub the very obscure Blue Butterfly Fish:

I'm glad somebody likes To-Y, 'cause I never have. The music is OK, but this is really a pretty bad show through and through. I admit the fan restoration is an interesting concept, but don't get your hopes up on this one being great anime. That said, I appreciate Justin's writing and really enjoyed Buried Treasure...even if on occasion, it is Buried Trash instead.

Bobby's Girl looks to be a nice and terrible LD transfer as well, so I'll definitely have my work cut out for me on that one. I've seen a rough fansub of it, and while it doesn't look as bad as To-Y, it's definitely going to need some work. BB Fish is an "anime of interest" for the To-Y Restoration Committee as well.

Would REALLY like to see the anime. I already own the manga...though looking around a few places to get a second copy to scan it.

Peter "this is what I base my sense of self-worth on" Payne--founder of J-List, the number one source for crappy shirts that read "Looking for a Japanese Girlfriend" in the English-speaking world that also leads the charge in making certain US anime fans erroneously equate "doujinshi" with "pornography"--is not really someone I can say I respect, but to his credit he did do one great thing in his life: he provided Seishun Shitemasu, a fan parody group he basically founded, with the laserdisc to To-Y. From that came one of my favorite "parody dubs" of all time: Anime Bites.
Due to the rarity of To-Y (that and Five Star Stories were the coveted LDs of yore), I first saw Anime Bites in the late 90s, long before actually seeing To-Y. Yet despite having no idea of who Morrissey is (all I know is that "Morrissey sucks!" per this dub) and having never heard any of the songs used in Anime Bites due to a complete indifference towards grunge and anything from Seattle that isn't entitled "Almost Live!", I still prefer that dub over To-Y itself. To this day, the only time I have ever heard "State of Love and Trust" by Pearl Jam is within the confines of that dub. I had to do a Google search to find out that the band who did that song was Pearl Jam. I think that sums my personality up right there. "Did you know that when you hit me Eddie...I cried?" One thing this review doesn't really mention is that well...To-Y doesn't exactly make a whole lot of SENSE. Its desire to be "music video"-ish results in a lot of crazy nonsensical things happening to the point where I dare say that the parody dub, which I believe removed a few scenes, is actually a more coherent narrative. I think that more than the 80s character designs and music is what turns people away from To-Y with a vengeance. As for me, I picked up the digital restoration a few days ago when it came out and was quite impressed at how good everything looked compared to the nth-generation VHS tapes that were my only previous source for seeing this thing. Efforts such as this are what I think digital fansubbing should REALLY be about: preserving and restoring titles that will otherwise be completely lost to time. After all, the latest episode of [insert popular Shonen Jump animated series here] is going to come out on DVD anyway. I'm not sure I actually want to ask this question or not, since it'll inevitably bring the furries out of the woodwork, but is Niya one of the first--if not the first--"catgirls" in anime? |

Heh, this is one of the first Buried Treasures I was able to locate/obtain... Downloading it right now. I wouldn't have grabbed it if I hadn't seen this, and it doesn't look to be something I will enjoy, but I'm gonna check it out anyways. Haven't really had much exposure to "classics".

Funny, I did an article about To-y on my blog some weeks/months ago. Look like we (the fandom, collectively) feel the need to talk about classics. Must be a cyclic thing, I guess. Nothing worthy to watch on fansub.
Anyone here has read the To-y manga ? It's weird in a comical way, and the protagonist is a lolicon. Speaking about Tajima's works, there is also his 'Sex' manga (of which I am a fan ).
