So, just wondering, but what makes it International exactly? Will they be studying anime in other countries, have staff members from foreign production crews?

I'm wondering that too since it doesn't really mention anything international oriented. Sounds quite cool though, though does this mean they're going to start releasing statistics on anime or what? |

I'm not sure how to react to this news; I'm feeling unnerved and intruiged at the same time. Treating 'anime' as a social phenomenon to be analyzed scientifically and contemplated on sounds downright strange, since I do not think anime itself has much distinction from normal cartoons outside of the English-speaking nations (that is, it seems like a lot of investment for something not very large); however, it's an interesting endeavour, and I'm curious as to how it plays out.
On the other hand, the idea of a bunch of people getting paid to talk about market trends, which is what many forums like ANN do for free, sounds very much like the "cultural elites" of MTV's advertising and program blocs talking about 'social engineering'. I know that's what "consulting firms" and "analysts" do, but I have an inherent dislike of those types of folk anyway; a consultant gets paid for giving advice, not on results, so it would seem to me to be a "letch" stimulating industry, unless the advice is to be considered entertainment (whereby it has little or no practical value). |

I'm certainly in favour of anime research. Maybe, at long last, humanity will make progress on some of the really vital questions:
* Aviation: How to make a sea turtle, with a heavy shell and no wings to speak of, fly. * Genetics: Let's finally have some action on that catgirl project, eh? * Robotics: This is the 21st Century and we're still fighting wars with human soldiers? We must close the mecha gap! * Philosophy and religion: Theoretical and practical research into the summoning, control, and eventual disposal of tentacle demons, major and minor gods and goddesses, shinigami, tenshi, etc. * Physics: Special collaboration with Gainax. 'Nuff said. and so on. |

It'd be nice for something like this to come to America / United States. Or maybe even offer classes at Universities of a history of anime and titles which impacted the industry the most.

An International Anime Research Lab, huh? Were are the international people, huh? Where are the people from the anime-releasing companies in the US and whereever?
If they're trying to solve the outsourcing problem and the idea that everyone's talent is spread too thin (i.e. 50+ anime series per season), along with the rumored low pay; then okay. But if it's another one of those efforts to make money on the side; said research lab will be the next $unrise/Geneon and get laughed off the face of the earth by the rest of us. |

Yes, I'm all for it if this is the sort of research we're speaking of!  You left out the possible research into astronomy! Humanity can finally make contact with sexy space aliens, or at least cute ones. If it's the latter, then I want one that turns into a spaceship.
