so i finally got around to watching Be Invoked, and i have to say this one of the darkest animes i've ever seen, i can see now how it inspired Evangelion. it starts off slow, but as it goes on, it just starts getting really messed up. all in all this was a great series. the music is good, and space battles were fantastic.
does anyone know why this series hasn't been licensed? i can't see any reason why it wouldn't be, aside from the vintage.

It hasn't been licensed because its nearly 30 years old and its not Gundam.
I watched the first few episodes but then I deleted the rest because I needed more HD space and I wasn't particularly hooked. I intend to redownload and watch the rest of the series someday when I have less on my plate.

I really am tempted on buying the R2 releases since it was recently released in Japan. I've not seen this show since it was new, and really don't remember too much about it. Nippon Sunrise shows really don't have a good chance of being released in the states which is a shame since I really love Giant Gorg, Dragonar and Layzner the later two I actually bought the imports for. I also wonder if Sunrise's Cat's Eye will ever be released.

Ideon itself is ugly, almost comically so, but the I heard the show is absolutely crackshiggle insane! v1cious, how did you obtain the series? Through HK, R2 DVD...or some other means? If it's the latter you cannot legally tell me here, so PM your response if that's the case; but if the former, I'd be interested on where I could secure it (not that I'd hate the latter...); what's the disc count?

I'm guessing its via fansubs, since the movie was recently released.
I was somewhat uninterested in the early episodes, but I really do want to finish it someday because, as you said, the ending is supposed to be one of the most violent ever apparently, damn near everyone dies and then the universe itself is destroyed and I suspect the ending is the part that was an influence in Evangelion. I love endings that end in lots of deaths, so I *have* to see this one.

I watched the first few eps as well, and sadly wasn't impressed. Still, I've also heard about the ending being ...."cataclysmic". I've thought of just watching the two movies instead of the show and the second movie. Has anyone done this? And if so, what was your opinion of the "recap" movie?

yeah it's been being subbed for awhile, i can't say more than that though,
if you don't wanna watch the whole thing, i'd recommend just watching the two movies back to back. the final episode of the TV series was a complete copout, and shouldn't be taken as anything. if you do choose the watch the whole series, just skip it and watch Be Invoked.

I made a topic about this a few weeks ago and sadly no one really had a comment. I'm not gonna repost what I said (it's very long) but long story short Be Invoked is a great movie. Despite the series being slow, lackluster, and having very few if any likeable characters I honestly feel it's worth sitting through all of the episodes and A Contact just to fully appreciate Be Invoked. Honestly you couldn't ask for a better ending, and most of the movie is action non-stop. In fact I'm pretty sure after watching that movie I would be more entertained with the series itself.
Despite all of the rabid Eva fans hardly any of em even know what Ideon is. It's a bit of a shame. Anyway as previously stated this show will never be licensed because; it's old (1980), it's not flashy and centered on drama, and it's a mecha series (we know how much love those shows get in the US).
Randall, I heard we never got Layzner because the masters were damaged and during that time the license ran out and Bandai opted not to re-license it. It's a damn shame because I really want to see this series.

The series never really caught my interest in the first three episodes, but after seeing clips from Be Invoked, I want to at least see A Contact, just so I can watch Be Invoked and understand at least a bit of what's going on. I heard the series doen't really pick up until later on, so I'm kinda hesitant about watching it.
