Has there ever been a time where you were listening to one of your anime soundtracks and one of your family members walks in and hears the music being played? Which series was it from? What was their reaction to it?
Last night I decided to listen to the Excel Saga soundtrack that I got from the Geneon sale. My dad came into my room getting ready to go to bed and such, and when he heard it, he thought it was some "great music". "Where did you get such great classic anime music?" is what he said to me. Now the funny part is when I told him what the humor and maturity level of this series is, and he was in utter shock. He could not believe that such nice music comes from an anime with the same kind of humor level as the Simpsons. Edit, changed the title to match with the other threads, and also added the year. Well, actually I got all sorts of reactions from my parents especially...
My mom came one day a little earlier from work and I was listening (quite loud )Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex ost. (at that very moment there was Yoko Kano and Tim Jensen's Lithium Flower)... My mom is quite great and she doesn't mind my strange tastes in music but she came into my room and asked me where was that song from.. I told her and I asked her to stay just a little longer so I put Aeria Gloris.... from the same ost... she just loved it... and even know I still don't understand how was that possible taking into consideration that she usually says about these kind of songs are too "noisy". |

Well awhile back I was in my room listening to the BECK soundtrack. Pretty much my entire family passed went into my room (seperately and at different times) and listened for a bit. My mom probably thought less of it as she's not much for rock. My two little sisters who watch anime with me sometimes stayed for a song or 2 and listened to some of the songs with me.

Oh well...I was listening to Noir OST (awesome my god)...
and my mom heard it....she siad thath it was a very weird music and oh how can you hear those things???? I dont blame her...she didn't grow up in this century..its the 21st here...hehe... but sometimes it pisses me off when she criticises every music that I listen to...I will grow up mom...but not now...I'm still 21...I have a few more years to "play" 'sigh'..... |

One time I was listening to the main theme of Tales of Symphonia, and my Mom asked 'oh, is that Indian?"
When I said "no, it's Japanese," she said something like "Ooh. Asian music has a similar feel to it sometimes, huh?" She said the same thing about Ayumi Hamasaki, too. |

One time I was listening to the FMA OST Rewrite by Asian Kung-Fu Generation (the best J-Rock band ever!) while studying for some Midterms when my dad walked in and said "Son, what're you doing?... Oh, listening to.. Japanese music? You're so weird! You should be studying!... Well, it's not a bad song... It sure as hell doesn't compare to Pink Floyd though! Now start studying!"

I recall listening to the Twelve Kingdoms soundtrack, and my dad walks in, and says, "Hm, since when did you start listening to traditional Chinese music? Good for you, I'm glad you're finally starting to take pride in your own culture."
I didn't feel like telling him that it was from a Japanese anime series. |

Several years ago I was listening to the Escaflowne - Lovers Only OST while visiting my parent's house. I was in one of the back rooms, working on an illustration or something that I had an upcoming deadline for, and I always like to listen to music while I work. "Memory of Fanelia" was the track playing at the moment and my mother, who happened to walk into the room I was working in, made some off-hand comment like "That's really pretty," which was the first praise I had ever heard her give to anything remotely anime-related. I decided just to lie and say it was general symphonic music, so as not to incite and eye-rolling.
And last year, while I was crunching to finish an animation I was working for a festival deadline, I practically lived in the studio for about three weeks, playing music almost constantly. I got several of my friends hooked on the Ashura-jo no hitomi OST, Haibane Renmei OST, and the completely-unrelated-to-anime-but-still-bloody-brilliant Milk-Eyed Mender by Joanna Newsom.
Haha, my fiance is from mainland China and he also mistook my Twelve Kingdoms OST for traditional Chinese music. When I told him it's from an anime (and one he dislikes, at that), he stammered something like "Psh, all those Japanese know how to do is copy," refusing to admit that he had originally liked the music quite a bit. |

My flatmate asked me what the hell I was listening to when I was listening to the Berserk soundtrack (especially Forces, awesome song!) But I guess it is a pretty odd soundtrack full of dodgy synth music, so his confusion was probably justified.
My brother thought the Samurai Champloo soundtrack was cool. He'd heard of one of the main collaborators on it (he's into that kind of music anyway.) |

My parents love the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks; and my sister enjoyed the GITS: SAC OST the couple times I played it with her (same goes with a couple of my cousins).

I was listening to Future Soundscape II (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle ost) when my mom came for a visit (i don't live with my parents) and she sat there on the table for awhile whilst we talked and suddenly she just said: "this song is nice!!" I mean it's kinda weird for my mom to say such a thing because she actually never really show any interest in orchestra type of music. Feel the power of Yuki Kajiura yo~!!!

I was in my orthodontist's office the other day to get my braces tightened, and I was listening to the Haruhi Suzumiya soundtrack on my iPod. The guy working on my teeth told me he urgently needed to perform an iPod check, so I complied and forked it over. He listened for a few seconds, made a strange face, and told me he needed to further investigate. So he went down the list of all 200 or so artists on my iPod, and told me I failed the test because the only artist's music he also had on his mp3 player was Queen. (and I currently have over 400 songs on there. Half of them anime theme songs, and the other half is mostly made up of J-rock/pop music, other foreign pop/rock music, and American punk-pop/rock music.) He asked me if I wanted to be Japanese, and I shouted out "NO!" I probably said it too quickly, since he just laughed and gave my device back to me without saying anything.

You have an excessively nosy dentist, a little too nosy for my tastes. Oh that reminds me the owner of my dentist's office that I used to get checkups at is Japanese. I haven't been there in a while (which is bad). Also I get that response alot from people: thinking that I want to be Japanese, or thinking that I am part Japanese by being so interested in all this stuff. |

My family is so used to me watching, reading, or listening to strange things that I don't get much of any reaction at all. It's just "what are you listening to?" and an "oh." after I tell them. I've gotten some odd looks from people when I read manga in public though. Plans to indoctrinate my parents into anime are in the works, at least with my mother. I just need someone to license Rozen Maiden. (My mother collects antique dolls. Anything with dolls is great to her.) I've already turned my sister into an anime fan. If I can get the whole family hooked, I won't have to buy as much for myself. |
