So has anyone noticed this with their current releases of Basilisk, Negima!, and Speed Grapher (might Trinity Blood get a similar treatment?)?

Personally I'm only collecting Basilisk. I have to say I love these limited edition releases. The first one not only came with that beautiful box, but the whole slipcase thing was a big surprise. The packaging itself looks much better than the regular editions. The cards weren't much to look at, just simple cards with ninja's, but the case and interview notes were just beautiful.

But is the extra $5 on the msrp worth it? For me I suppose it is. My collection is what stands out the most in my room so the way my collection looks is important to me.

I really hope this series ends up being one of my favorites because i know that the LE cases are a little longer than the regular ones, so they'll definately "stick out" when looking at the collection.

It would stick out more with the box, but I don't like boxes on my shelf. I use the boxes when I let friends borrow stuff, but special boxes like this one, Serial Experiments Lain, and Boogiepop Phantom get used as item boxes in my room.

I guess this thread is also to shed light on the fact that DDD has these limited editions available for a little under $22. I think I'll be ordering it from them since more than likely Best Buy will have it for a higher price, AND I would also have to pay tax. DDD is definately the cheapest way to go for these editions... unless someone finds something cheaper.

Samurai Seven also had limited editions with extras (that didn't make it to the UK version, naturally). It's a pity they didn't start this sooner as the only extras they included with Kiddy Grade were the cards (and they messed those up) and I would [s]kill[/s] have paid the premium in a flash for translated Continuity Files.

I'm picking up the LEs of Negima! out of liking for the series, but beyond the first volume (with the mega-cool artbox), there's not that much reason to get them; I got Vol. 2 yesterday, and the packaging is exactly the same as the standard box, just with an extra cardboard box to hold the figure. So, if you're not into figures, they're not that great, and even I might have to stop getting figures so that my place doesn't look like "40-Year-Old Virgin" Andy's house. But, I also found them for $21.16 at DDD, and that's cheap enough.

Damnit, I wish strikethrough did work on these forums, there'd be so much more comedic potential.
(Edited to make a sentence make sense)

It's a good idea, and gives them something to offer that give more to those who purchase the shows and make some extra money as well. I personally didn't go for the Samurai 7 special editions primarily due to costs. Each one being $10-$15 more for an art book was a bit too costly for me. Unfortunately I also lack any interest in the current series with LE's but would pick up such editions in the future if they were released for an anime I was interested enough in.

I saw the Trinity Blood box at Funimation's booth. The Trinity Blood is teh best one they have done to date. It has a solid bottom and then is split down the middle and opens up. They have 2 gold metal hinges that curve as it opens up. I have never seen a box like it before.

They have been taking pictures of the boxes lately and posting on their forums. You should check it out if they do. I already have my preorder in Smile

Hardback books included with the Japanese Collector's Edition DVDs which were half storyboard, half background material.
You can see a few pages from one here:

A friend sent this to me. Here's what the Trinity Blood LE box looks like. Pretty sweet!

The Basilisk and Speed Grapher LE don't rally offer too much. The booklets that came free with Fullmetal and Samurai 7 seemed better put together and didn't cost more. I really likle the horizontal Samurai 7 books with the interviews. I also think the reflective logo on Speed Grapher looks neat. These would be awesome releases if Funimation charged $30. I have the feeling that Funi is releasing two editions that are close in price to get a feel about how much fans are willing to pay for new titles. If an overwhelming amount of people buy the $35 editions there DVD prices might go up, and hopefully will include even better extras. If people don't buy these editions Funi might follow Bandai's no frills $25 (or maybe cheaper) DVDs. I believe eventually (late 2007 maybe) some of these companies will be releasing really nice editions on Blu Ray or HDDVD for $35+ and no frills editions on standard def DVDs for under $25. The market seems to already have two types of DVD spenders which can be seen by the vast amount of people who are willing to wait for cheaper thinpak editions and the increasing amount of LE coming out.
